Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) directly influence learning, relationships, mood, and overall scholastic experiences. The culture of most colleges and universities is very different for Native American students with close ties to their traditional communities. "Traditional," in a Native American sense, means multiple interconnections of emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual identity that combine to define expectations for the Native American way. This traditional cultural perspective is often in conflict with college cultures where typically only the academic or social aspects of identity are addressed. The purpose of this research was to determine which type of social intervention is more efficient when comparing Peer Video Modeling and Peer Tutoring when attempting to decrease inappropriate social behaviors. Three children were chosen because they each displayed a lack of eye contact, inappropriate verbal responses, or avoidance of a response during free play sessions with their peers in the inclusionary prekindergarten classroom. The purposes of the study are to examine the effects of inquiry-based and teacher-centered instruction methods when teaching science for middle school students with learning disabilities. These two instructional methods were provided to 81 students in two middle schools located in southern New Jersey. Of those, 30 students with learning disabilities, 15 in each school participated in the study. Both groups were given a pre and post test prior to and after the three weeks of science instruction to evaluate student performance. The death of a loved one is a significant stressor for children. Most children are exposed to grief at an early age. Without necessary support and guidance, children are much more susceptible to negative emotional, cognitive, and developmental effects. Expressive therapies such as bibliotherapy are supposed to provide a safe and healthy outlet for children's grief. However, school psychologists have limited pre-service training and readily available resources to effectively address children's death-related grief. The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of professional development on teachers' delivery of written praise notes and the number of office disciplinary referrals (ODRs). The professional development consisted of training teachers on the effective use of behavior specific written praise, as well as on how to analyze and respond to praise-note and office disciplinary referral data. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine whether a response to intervention program (RTI) would be beneficial to students in the middle school population. Classes in two urban schools were observed and data were collected to decide the effectiveness of the RTI strategies and interventions which were given to the students. The first class was a language arts class and the second class was a math class. The purpose of this research was to (1) examine teachers' attitudes and perceptions regarding harassment, intimidation, and bullying, (HIB) behaviors displayed by public school students, (2) determine changes in teachers attitudes and perceptions regarding HIB as a result of specific training and, (3) identify the subsequent impact on their views and opinions of HIB. The purposes of this investigation were to evaluate the use of the Reasoning & Writing Direct Instruction program, examine the curriculum-based measurement tools for writing fluency of Total Words Written and Correct Word Sequence, examine the impact of teaching students with disabilities self-management techniques, including self-monitoring, self-graphing, and self-reflecting, and review how self-reflections toward writing and writing performances change through the process. The purpose of this exploratory research was to ascertain the validity of the Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS) language learning method in comparison with "traditional" language learning methods. The research focused on high school students (n= 44) in grades 9-12 with mild learning disabilities such as specific learning disorder, other health impairment, communication impairment, and multiple disabilities. Students varied greatly with the successes of both language learning methods. There were four classes that participated in the study and half of the classes performed better on assessments when taught through TPRS techniques. This study aimed at evaluating a sample of six fourth graders with learning disabilities as they were taught Collaborative Strategic Reading. The program was taught by a special education teacher in a self-contained classroom over a period of 5 weeks. Mean comprehension scores increased slightly over the course of the study while their vocabulary scores remained relatively consistent. Student average scores in vocabulary understanding were slightly higher than their comprehension scores. Although average scores increased, individual student performance was inconsistent. These results suggest that students with learning disabilities require more time to learn and develop strategies in comprehension. The findings …

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth and young adults ages 10--24. In 2001 the U.S. Surgeon General laid out a national strategic plan to more effectively address suicide prevention (United States Public Health Service, 2001). In 2008, Gene Cash, then president of The National Association of School Psychologists, made a "call to action" to prevent suicide. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Direct Instruction (DI) for teaching oral comprehension to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A total of eight students, ages six through eight in a special education classroom participated in the study. They were taught lessons from a scripted DI program 10-15 minutes daily for 10 weeks. Students completed daily oral lessons followed by a worksheet to check for their understanding. Praise notes have the potential to positively influence student behavior and relationships. Few studies have examined the social validity of praise, however, and these studies have focused on students' perceptions. The purpose of this study was to describe student, parent, and teacher perceptions of a school-wide praise note intervention at a Title I elementary school. Twenty-three teachers, 203 parents, and 203 students completed surveys regarding a pre-existing praise note intervention. Surveys consisted of 13 quantitative items and two open-ended questions. Quantitative and qualitative results indicate that participants had positive perceptions of praise notes. Participants also believed that praise notes helped …

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the use of technology would increase automaticity of basic subtraction facts with "at risk" students and whether or not self-monitoring would motivate "at risk" students to improve their math scores to achieve automaticity of basic subtraction facts. This study was done to examine the effect of the 20 Word Chant on student's ability to recall sight words. The participants were from various backgrounds, ability levels, disabilities. The students were exposed to two presentation formats. The 20 Word Chant was added to the daily routine as well as the daily flash card drill. The class was split into two groups and was exposed to both models. The students were given a one-on-one sight word fluency pre and post test. The purpose of this research was to determine if training affected parent attitudes towards the transition planning process. Twenty-one parent volunteers participated in this study. Parents answered survey questions about their attitudes before attending two training sessions. A second survey was then completed to determine if there was a significant difference in responses after training. A pre-post survey design was used where means were compared using ANOVA. The results showed a statistical significant difference in question 6 "I know that my child has a behavior plan" in favor of the training, and no significances between pre-post responses to other questions.

This research was a qualitative program evaluation of students' perceptions of Latinos in Action (LIA), a peer-mentoring program that seeks to improve high school Latino graduation rates and college admittance. The study was conducted with college students who participated in the program in high school. Research indicates that, in some instances, siblings can be a first line of defense when a child experiences bullying. Research also shows that children with disabilities are often prime targets of bullying. However, no research was located that specifically explored the relationship between siblings of children with disabilities, their perceptions of bullying and the roles that they play when bullying occurs. Social skill instruction is needed in both targeted and universal contexts. This research utilized a universal social skill intervention, Book in a Bag (BIB), to increase the use of a specific social skill by all students within an elementary school, including students identified as at-risk for behavior problems.
