The purpose of the present study is to examine what type of mathematic program best teaches students with mental retardation how to compute basic addition facts. It was hypothesized that the Touch Math program would be used as a strategy more effectively and with greater speed by students with mental retardation when solving addition problems, than other non-Touch Math strategies. Participants include one child with the secondary diagnosis of mental retardation, as determined by her latest Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Enhancing Non-Academic Classroom Skills For Young Students With Disabilities Through Social Stories, Katherine Sue Kirkbride

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between a social story intervention and non-academic social behavior in young students in a special day class. In this study, three participants with a variety of disabilities were selected from a special day class. When individual undesired behaviors are taken into account along with functional equivalents, identified through a functional behavior assessment, it is hypothesized that undesired behaviors will decrease with a corresponding increase in appropriate behavior. This project was done by a special education teacher of the severely handicapped. The goal of this project is to promote a teaching strategy called Social Stories which combine the written word with various scenarios for the autistic individual. Preliminary findings of teachers who are using Social Stories show great promise for some autistic individuals who function at a variety of levels. Unfortunately, Social Stories seems to be neglected as a teaching strategy and what can be done to change so that more teachers are aware of it and using it?

The purpose of this qualitative study is to gain insight into the needs of children with ADHD from the perspective of teachers. Interviews were conducted either face-to-face or by telephone with teacher participants provided by Sylvan Learning Center and through snowball sampling. Findings of this study are expected to give social workers an opportunity to work collaboratively with teachers, parents and mental health professionals in applying a multimodal approach toward developing effective treatment strategies for children with ADHD.

The Effects Of Music On Communication And Behavior In Children With Autism, Cheryl Ann Nicolosi

The research demonstrates that music therapy is an effective tool in the area of communication and behavior with children with autism and children with other learning disabilities. The hypothesis of this thesis predicted that music would enhance communication and decrease inappropriate behaviors. Qualitative data were gathered from interviews with music therapists and observations of students diagnosed with autism and other disabilities including attention deficit disorder, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, and other levels of mental retardation. Results supported the hypothesis and also supported the research in the literature that music lowered the anxiety levels in all individuals, resulting in increased learning.

The purpose of this study was to teach play skills to a six year-old deaf male child with autism and to determine if these play skills would reduce self-stimulatory behaviors.
