General Education Preschool Teachers' Preparedness To Teach Students With Disabilities Within A General Education Preschool Setting, Mary-Margaret Satterfield
General Education Preschool Teachers' Preparedness To Teach Students With Disabilities Within A General Education Preschool Setting, Mary-Margaret Satterfield
Ed.D. Dissertations
Since Congress passed amendments in 1997 to the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), there has been an emphasis on instruction to students with disabilities in the general education classroom, especially with preschool students. The significant increase of students with disabilities in general education classrooms precipitated the need for general education teachers to have knowledge and skills about special education to support and provide instruction to students with disabilities. The purpose of this basic, interpretive qualitative study was to investigate how general education preschool teachers in a large school district in Tennessee felt prepared by their preservice, in-service, and continuing education …
Investigating Evidence-Based Practices And Interventions Using Multifaceted Learning Theory For Students In A Special Education Self-Contained Classroom, Adam Maitland
Ed.D. Dissertations
Teachers working in a special education self-contained classroom were required to implement evidence-based practices and interventions, rarely researched in a school setting, with fidelity to meet the needs of students with intellectual disabilities. Evidence-based practices and interventions for students with intellectual disabilities were researched in clinical settings with one to three student participants and without a common evaluation tool. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to use the Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model General Educator Rubric to investigate how experienced teachers used multifaceted learning theory when implementing evidence-based practices and interventions in a diverse special education self-contained classroom to …
The Effects Of Parent Training And Information Centers On Parent Empowerment, Hayden A. O. Lewis
The Effects Of Parent Training And Information Centers On Parent Empowerment, Hayden A. O. Lewis
Ed.D. Dissertations
Parents of children who receive special education services from the public school are considered equal partners in their child’s education with school professionals on the Individual Education Program team. Each state has a Parent Training and Information Center (PTIC) that seeks to empower parents to fulfill their right as an equal partner. The current study compared the advocacy, knowledge, competence, self-efficacy, and empowerment of two groups of parents of children with disabilities who received special education services in Tennessee. The experimental group of parents (n=36) had attended a workshop provided by a PTIC and the control group (n=21) had not …
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Alternate Academic Standards And Alternate Testing In Northeast Tennessee, Jodie Bakely
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Alternate Academic Standards And Alternate Testing In Northeast Tennessee, Jodie Bakely
Ed.D. Dissertations
In accordance with the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), Tennessee developed alternate academic standards and an alternate assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities. This study examined teacher perceptions of the alternate academic standards and alternate assessment in Northeast Tennessee. The researcher interviewed nine teachers of students with significant cognitive disabilities who had used the alternate academic standards and alternate assessment with their students in Northeast Tennessee. The study found that the teachers interviewed did not see the value in using the alternate state standards or alternate assessment with their students. The implications of this study included a need for …
Boredom Proneness And Character Strengths Related To Academic Achievement In Adolescence, Bonnie Iannaccone
Boredom Proneness And Character Strengths Related To Academic Achievement In Adolescence, Bonnie Iannaccone
Ed.D. Dissertations
Abstract
Susceptibility to boredom can interfere with students’ ability to achieve their academic potential, with enduring negative consequences. In the present study, the researcher investigated differences in boredom proneness and character strengths in adolescent high school students and the ability of boredom proneness scores and character strengths to predict academic achievement. Results indicated that 9 of 10 students were moderately or highly prone to boredom. Students’ whose top character strength was humility were more highly prone to boredom than students’ whose top-ranked character strengths were bravery, prudence, or curiosity. From boredom proneness and character strengths data the researcher concluded that …
Effects Of Restorative Practices On Students With Disabilites: A Quantitative Study, Tammy Potter
Effects Of Restorative Practices On Students With Disabilites: A Quantitative Study, Tammy Potter
Ed.D. Dissertations
From the enactment of the Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994 to the time of this study in 2019, school discipline has been a growing concern as more and more students fell victim to the negative impacts of zero-tolerance discipline policies commonly utilized in U.S. public schools. School discipline continues to be a mounting concern, as each year, more students are suffering the negative impacts of zero-tolerance discipline policies. There has been growing concern that students with special needs are particularly vulnerable due to the exclusionary nature of dealing with behavioral issues that are often a manifestation of the student’s disability. …
Teacher Bullies Or Frustrated Teachers? How The Classroom Environment Affects The Teacher-Student Relationship, Susan P. Mcmillan-Quilantan
Teacher Bullies Or Frustrated Teachers? How The Classroom Environment Affects The Teacher-Student Relationship, Susan P. Mcmillan-Quilantan
Ed.D. Dissertations
This quantitative research study examined the issue of teacher-student bullying behavior as perceived by third through eighth grade teachers in three suburban schools to determine if there was any relationship between teacher bullying behavior and an inclusive classroom setting. Two survey instruments were used, the Survey of Teachers’ Attitudes toward Inclusion (Cochran, 1998), and the Survey on Bullying Teachers and Teacher Bullying (Twemlow, Fonagy, Sacco, & Brethour, 2006). The results indicated there is a statistically significant difference between special education teachers’ and general education teachers’ attitudes toward inclusive classrooms. The results also indicated that teacher bullying occurs across settings by …

Performance Appraisals For Special Education Teachers: Examining The Need For Separation And Alignment, Iyuna K. Harris
Ed.D. Dissertations
This study explored the current practices used to evaluate special education teachers in the Midwest in order to examine the need for separation and alignment as it relates to performance appraisals. There is limited research available regarding special education teacher evaluation. The research that has been accomplished shows that the roles and responsibilities between special education and general education teachers are different and therefore there exists a need to have different evaluation criteria. In order to accomplish the exploration of the current practices used to evaluate special education teachers, the researcher examined the current evaluation process, evaluation tools, and job …
The Utility Of Local Norms In The Identification Of Students With Learning Disabilities In Reading, Brian C. Malliett
The Utility Of Local Norms In The Identification Of Students With Learning Disabilities In Reading, Brian C. Malliett
Ed.D. Dissertations
Third grade students were administered two universal screening reading measures at the beginning and end of the school year. In an effort to limit the misidentification of reading disabilities (RD) in lower socioeconomic community populations of the school district, local norms were established. The local and national norms were compared using the 10th percentile, or -1.27 Z-score, to identify discrepant scores. A diminished classification of RD was evidenced when local norms were utilized in contrast to the use of national norms. Locally-normed slope scores in conjunction with the benchmark testing scores showed a moderate level of correlation than when …

Adequate Yearly Progress, Special Education, And Student Success: Can They All Co-Exist?, Ruth Reynolds
Ed.D. Dissertations
This study investigated the ways that the disaggregation of Illinois State Achievement Test (ISAT) scores has impacted the progress and performance of students with disabilities within two central Illinois counties, discovered the interventions taken with this subgroup, and explored the ethical implications of these interventions. The participants were middle school special education and general education teachers, administrators, and support staff. A mixed-methods format with a predominant qualitative approach was used. The needs of students with disabilities were addressed by implementing co-teaching, inclusion, and collaboration between special education and general education teachers. Schools with successful subgroups of students with disabilities also …
