Teaching requires a lot of caring, determination, creativity, flexibility, knowledge, and understanding. To have these traits shine through, teachers must have compassion for the students they educate. When compassion turns into mental health stressors, teachers can no longer concentrate effectively in the classroom environment. Giving a teacher tools of mindfulness practices can help the teacher to equip themselves to help counter compassion stress. Many factors may lead to burnout of special education teachers. Teachers are faced with overwhelming caseloads, student behaviors, job duties, and a history that has been inconsistent with appropriate supports for students with special needs. The studies that were reviewed offered information that directly correlated with burnout. There was much focus on the three areas addressed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator Survey (MBI-ES). The three areas of burnout according to this survey were emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishments. Raising A Child With A Severe Disability: The Impact On Parents And Siblings, Kathleen A. Packingham

A review of 10 recent studies that reported on the effects of raising a child with a severe disability. The paper examines the effects of stress on parents raising a child with a severe disability, as well as outcomes for siblings being raised in the same households. Mothers reported higher daily parenting hassles and stress than did fathers. Maladaptive behaviors were the biggest contributing factor to increased stress in the family. Positive coping strategies and increased service utilization lead to decrease in stress and increase in positive outcomes.
