Eleven studies published between 2011 and 2017 were examined and chosen for inclusion in the Chapter 2 literature review. Studies were chosen if they evaluated the effectiveness of a specific intervention treatment used to reduce behaviors associated with anxiety in students diagnosed with ASD. Studies evaluating effectiveness of medication treatments were not included in the review. Lastly, studies were not limited to the United States, however, most studies were domestic in nature.

Students with learning disabilities who spend the majority of the school day in a general education classroom often struggle to appropriately deal with feelings of frustration and anxiety. There is currently a gap in understanding how special education teachers can support the social and emotional inclusion of students with learning disabilities when they are in the general education classroom. The focus of this research is to better understand causes of anxiety and depression among college students and how colleges can better assist these students. For various reasons, social anxiety is linked to excessive drinking and binge eating/exercising. A comorbid relationship exists between anxiety, depression and sleep disturbance. Sleep disturbance has multiple causes, but this research mostly focused on how technology interferes with sleep. In addition to sleep disturbance, excessive drinking, and binge eating/exercising/anxiety and depression are linked to perfectionism, goal setting, living accommodations, parent attachment and transition, and career planning. As educators, we have seen Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), anxiety levels, mental health issues, and explosive behaviors rise in the general education population as well as the special education population in the last five years.
