A Procedure For Monitoring Individualized Education Programs For The Handicapped, George T.L. Holt

Public Law 94-142 mandates that each handicapped child have an individualized education program (IEP) which must be based upon the unique needs of the child. Federal legislation requires that IEPs be developed and implemented if state and local education agencies are to receive federal funds. A review of literature indicated that the procedures currently being used to monitor the IEP mandate do not have documented validity or reliability. The purposes of this investigation were to develop, validate, establish reliability, and field test the utility of a checklist designed to monitor IEPs.

This study was designed to determine if generalization, the facilitation of performance on untrained items through training of related skills, can be evidenced in the language behavior of an aphasic population. Five aphasic subjects were drawn from a patient population at a Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Michigan. Each subject was presented with 25 unfamiliar pictures utilizing five cueing techniques: whole word repetition, first syllrble cue, sentence completion, written word, and a control of no input. These were then used to elicit verbal responses to the pictures. The subjects were then shown 25 similar pictures, without cues. Statistical analysis showed …

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Three Teaching Procedures On Improving Comprehension, Barbara K. Hakes

PROBLEM:

An effective 'teaching procedure was needed to improve the comprehension skills of an eight year old male.

PROCEDURE:

This study examined the effectiveness of three teaching methods. These methods were questioning (Procedure A), sequence of ideas (Procedure B) and outlining the main idea. and details (Procedure C). The three methods were alternated with instructional sessions on an unpredictable schedule. A 100 word story was used in each session followed by ten questions. Questions consisted of five textually explicit questions, three textually implicit and two scriptal implicit questions. A multi-element design was used. Results were graphed.

This investigation focused on the examination of the effectiveness and costs of instructional delivery in using programmed tutorial materials by trained high school paraprofessionals to instruct learners attending the elementary self-contained and resource rooms. Forty tutees, divided equally into experimental and control groups, were administered two pre and posttest measures, the E-B Beginning Reading Placement Test and the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test (WRMT). Tutees in experimental groups received tutorial instruction from the paraprofessional tutors 25 minutes daily over the ten-week treatment period. State and federal education of the handicapped legislation provides numerous safeguards to ensure appropriate educational opportunity. Parents are expected to be active participants. Schools are obligated to inform parents of their responsibilities, rights and procedures to be followed. The disclosure is lengthy and complicated. To simplify this process five brochures were prepared each to deal with a discrete step or process. The brochures are to be distributed at appropriate times and in conjunction with the full disclosure required by law.

The project resulted in the development of participation based reading selections and their accompanying teaching suggestions to be used with disabled secondary readers. The complete materials stressed hands-on applications and product-producing activities. The reading selections were written for several levels of reading difficulty. They incorporated the teaching of literary skills, study skills, and functional-living skills and provided practice in following directions. The approach produced materials meant to be a specific fit for disabled secondary readers who prefer to learn by doing.

This study examined some of the behavioral and academic characteristics of students who were placed in transition rooms, program philosophies and goals, behavioral and academic benefits of the transition experience, and parental reactions to the programs.

Subjects were 43 white middle-class students who were enrolled in two transition rooms in a midwestern school district during two consecutive school years. Fall and spring data from teacher ratings on the Myklebust Pupil Rating Scale (PRS) were obtained and used as indices of behavioral characteristics and progress. The purpose of this paper was to research criteria for screening for young, handicapped children with the intent of developing a single, comprehensive screening instrument. Analyses of existing screening devices and data from educators in the field were also included in the study.

The resulting screening instrument was designed to assess the developmental acquisition of skills. Major developmental areas included in the screening instrument are language skills, motor development, perceptual skills, cognitive development, social skills, and self-help skills.

The purposes of this study were 1) to compare the Moral and Friendship Development of regular class male students 1 with that of age matched EMR male students, and 2) to compare the relationship between Moral and Friendship Development within each group.

The 30 male subjects, 15 from regular classes and 15 from EMR classes, were equally divided into three chronological age groups; 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10. The regular class subjects were attending the UNI lab school; EMR subjects were attending public schools in Fredricksburg, Charles City, Cedar Falls and Waterloo, Iowa.

Statement Of The Problem

There were two sets of problems which were of focal interest: (1) Did the achievement levels of the students selected come up a significant degree? (The administration wished a month's gain for a month's instruction.) (2) Did the children's personality and behavior characteristics change for the better?

Procedure

The design used was a one-group pretest-posttest design. Achievement, behavior, and personality traits were measured on the original sixteen children and in remaining ten who were still in the classes after two years.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between selected demographic and clinical variables and the reinstitutionalization rate of emotionally disturbed adolescents.;The population for the study was composed of 88 adolescents discharged from a state mental hospital in Virginia during the 31 month period from June, 1976, to January, 1979. The population was composed of both male and female adolescents, ages 13 to 18. The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelatedness of cognitive, role-taking, and moral judgment abilities. The problem of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference between the cognitive, role-taking and moral judgment skills of emotionally disturbed adolescents when compared with their normal peers.;While studies investigating this relationship have been few in number, there is an apparent positive relationship among the three variables with cognitive development providing the foundation for the role-taking and moral judgment development.
