The Effects Of A Holistic-Graphophonic Intervention On The Decoding Performance Of Children With Reading Disabilities, E. Judith Krisman Cohen Mar 1996

The Effects Of A Holistic-Graphophonic Intervention On The Decoding Performance Of Children With Reading Disabilities, E. Judith Krisman Cohen

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an intervention combining holistic and graphophonic methods on the decoding performance of children with reading disabilities. The impact of this synthesis of teaching methods was evaluated by examining five students' abilities to decode a set of training words using three common vowel patterns. Words containing these magic e, double vowel, and closed vowel patterns were presented in isolation and in context. Additional sets of novel words and nonsense words using the same vowel patterns were used to evaluate generalization.

The study incorporated single-subject experimental research methods, using a multiple …

The Effects Of Social Skills Training On The Writing Skills Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Margaret Fahringer Mar 1996

The Effects Of Social Skills Training On The Writing Skills Of Middle School Students With Learning Disabilities, Margaret Fahringer

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine if training in social skills in a classroom setting would lead to greater achievement in writing. Fifty-seven children in grades six through eight (ages 11-14) from a predominantly middle-class school in a largely urban school district in South Florida participated in this study. Participation in the study was limited to students who had been evaluated, met diagnostic criteria for learning disabilities and were placed in a learning disabilities language arts class.

Seven dependent variables were measured to evaluate the effects of social skills training (independent variable) on the writing skills of children …

Teaching Pairs Of Preschoolers With Disabilities To Seek Adult Assistance In Response To Simulated Injuries: Acquisition And Promotion Of Observational Learning, A. M. Christensen, Benjamin Lignugaris / Kraft, B. Fiechtl

Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of direct training and observational learning on the acquisition, generalization, and maintenance of the first-aid skill “seeking adult assistance when injured” for three pairs of preschool children with disabilities (three target learners and three observational learners). A multiple probe design across pairs of participants was used. All 6 participants acquired the first-aid skill; more importantly, their responding generalized to playground and home situations and maintained at high levels during the follow-up probes conducted up to 8 weeks after training. The skill acquisition shown by the observational learners occurred without direct …

Functional Assessment As Strategy Assessment For Teaching Academics, Jo Mary Hendrickson, Robert A. Gable, Christy Novak, Stephanie Peck Jan 1996

Functional Assessment As Strategy Assessment For Teaching Academics, Jo Mary Hendrickson, Robert A. Gable, Christy Novak, Stephanie Peck

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

Functional assessment of aggressive, aberrant, and challenging behavior has dominated the literature with relatively little attention given to the potential utility of functional assessment in academics. The purpose of this article is to advocate functional strategy assessment as a procedure for acquiring data to support the formulation of intervention hypotheses by school-based personnel with the aim of improving the academic performance of students with emotional and behavioral disorders. A functional strategy assessment model is presented, and two case illustrations are employed to demonstrate the feasibility of this assessment model for use by practitioners. Examples of both an individual and small …

Designing Supportive School Environments, J. Ron Nelson, Geoff Colvin

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

There is no question that all students, especially those with serious emotional disturbance, benefit from a predictable, consistent, well-organized, and safe school environment. The purpose of this paper is to describe and illustrate an effective approach that has had positive results in achieving such a school environment. Specifically, the paper describes how to achieve effective ecological arrangements and common area routines across the school environment. In addition, we present a case study with preliminary results.
