Saudi Special Education Teachers’ Knowledge, Skills, And Professional Development Needs Of Assistive Technology In The Classroom, Mazen Abdurhman Almethen
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This project assesses Saudi Arabian special education teachers’ perceptions about their competencies and professional development needs on assistive technology (AT). The researcher developed an online self-administrated 27 question survey in order to evaluate special education teachers’ perceived knowledge regarding AT, as well as to investigate their needs for professional development. The survey webpage link was sent via email to 110 special education teachers at General Directorate of Education in Unaizah, Saudi Arabia. A total of 37 teachers participate in this study for a 33.6% response rate. The findings indicate that special education teachers are not confident in their ability to …
Using Errorless Teaching To Teach Generalized Manding For Information Using “How?”, Christopher Bloh, Christopher Scagliotti, Sarah Baugh, Megan Sheenan, Shane Silas, Nicole Zulli
Using Errorless Teaching To Teach Generalized Manding For Information Using “How?”, Christopher Bloh, Christopher Scagliotti, Sarah Baugh, Megan Sheenan, Shane Silas, Nicole Zulli
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
Five reinforcing activities were presented to and interrupted for two participants with autism. An errorless teaching procedure was then introduced with two similar activities prompting the participants to request information saying “How?” in order to resume the activity. The dependent variable included both the cumulative number of times “How?” occurred and number of times he used the acquired information to access his reinforcer. Training was conducted across five clinicians to program for and determine generalization across both activities and people. Results suggest that one participant’s manding for information generalized across activities and clinicians, although his utilizing the acquired information was …

An International Immersion Into Co-Teaching: A Wake-Up Call For Teacher Candidates In General And Special Education, Kevin Oh, Wendy Murawski, Natalie Nussli
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
This case study explored the short-term international co-teaching experience of pre-service general education teachers who were paired up with intern special education teachers (N = 8) to provide English language instruction to students in South Korea. Pre-, during-, and post-data were collected to investigate how the participants experienced their co-teaching. The narratives of two participants were chosen for phenomenological analysis, reflecting an overwhelmingly positive and a rather negative co-teaching experience. The key ingredients to a successful partnership were identified as open communication, the willingness to accept both positive and negative feedback, the willingness to learn from or get inspired by …
Functional Technology For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: Meta-Analysis Of Mobile Device-Based Interventions, Jemma Kim, Christina H. Kimm
Functional Technology For Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: Meta-Analysis Of Mobile Device-Based Interventions, Jemma Kim, Christina H. Kimm
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
This study employs a meta-analysis of single-subject design research to investigate the efficacy of mobile device-based interventions for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) and to further examine possible variables that may moderate the intervention outcomes. A total of 23 studies, 78 participants, and 140 observed cases that met the inclusion criteria were included in the meta-analysis. The efficacy of interventions was measured by computing the percentage of nonoverlapping data points (PNDs) and compared across participants’ characteristics, mobile device types, functions of mobile device use, target skills, and intervention strategies. The results showed that interventions with mobile devices for individuals with …
Strategies To Assist In Decreasing Escape Maintained Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberlee A. Luke
Strategies To Assist In Decreasing Escape Maintained Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kimberlee A. Luke
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Many children with ASD partake in escape maintain behaviors for numerous reasons. Children with autism might have difficulty attending to long tasks, can get overwhelmed with novel activities, and the challenging behaviors may heighten when too many demands are placed on them. As a result, teachers, parents and interventionists may start to witness children’s challenging behaviors increase. Many of the challenging behaviors are thought to have an escape function from the long or difficult task at hand. This paper will find and address various strategies that may be applied to decrease escape maintained behaviors in children with ASD. The aim …

Social Work Students Ability To Identify Signs Of Autism In Children, Heather Nicole Hopkins
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of students in the Master of Social Work (MSW) program to correctly identify signs of autism in children by completing a survey. This research project was conducted in collaboration with California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) and the MSW program by using MSW students as participants. The study used a survey designed with items that measured the knowledge of participants. The results of this study may be beneficial to the Director of Social Work, future MSW students, and professors to examine how well the current MSW program is preparing students …

Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
Abstract
In all fields of education, theory is in advance of practice (MacCormick, 1931, p. xii).
This essay provides a summary of the historical research themes of the Center for the Study of Correctional Education (CSCE) in the field of prison reform and its leading edge, correctional education. Those themes have been applied at CSCE’s system of parolee schools, the California State University, San Bernardino Reentry Initiative (CSRI). The essay addresses the professional contributions of four contributors or heroes of the correctional education: Alexander Maconochie at a penal colony in the South Pacific, William George among juveniles in New York …

Professional Development As A Means To Increase Teacher Fidelity And Improve Teacher And Student Outcomes, Shari Lynn Booth
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study was conducted to examine professional development techniques for training special education teachers to implement discrete trial training with in the classroom environment. The purpose of this study was to determine if professional development regarding discrete trail training increases the fidelity with which teachers implement discrete trail training when providing instruction to students with autism spectrum disorder. Specifically, the study noted if professional development that included coaching in the classroom increased the fidelity with which teachers were able to implement discrete trail training. Further, this study examined the correlation between an improvement in the fidelity with which teachers implemented …
Enhancing Student Altruism Using Secure Attachment Messages (Sam) In Lecture, Kelly Campbell, Stephany Ramos
Enhancing Student Altruism Using Secure Attachment Messages (Sam) In Lecture, Kelly Campbell, Stephany Ramos
Psychology Faculty Publications
In this brief report, we examine whether students’ (N=230) willingness to help individuals in distress (altruism) would be augmented after viewing Secure Attachment Messages (SAM) during lecture in a college racism course. Students were presented with SAM in alternating weeks as part of the PowerPoint presentation slides. In each of the weeks, their likelihood of engaging in altruistic behaviors was assessed using hypothetical scenarios and a student response system, Top Hat Monocle. We predicted that the SAM would prompt students to think of their attachment figures and enhance their feelings of security, which would increase their willingness to engage in …
