"This essay examines the relationship among language, experience, and historical agency. It does so in the context of recent work in critical literacy and critical pedagogy. My discussion takes its bearings from the work of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire, described in a recent interview with Carlos Alberto Torres as "the prime 'animateur' for pedagogical innovation and change in the second half of this century" (12). O trabalho relata historia e analisa os conteudos de estudos do programa do Gymnasio Nacional (antigo Colegio pedro II), proposta na reforma educacioal de 1899 de Epitácio Pessoa. A reforma retomou a idéia de um curso único para o Colégio, abolindo, assim, os cursos Clássico e Realista do plano anterior. Reduziu de sete para seis anos o curso secundário, seguindo a orientação do Curso Clássico de curriculo de 1898, ao mesmo tempo defendendo estudos de caráter pratico e utlitario, e nao so propadeutico.
