The Nebraska Educator: A Student-Led Journal

This qualitative case study evaluated the effectiveness of the Academic Skills Discussion Group, a new retention intervention targeting undergraduate students on academic probation. This intervention utilized a support group structure to provide social and academic supports to academically-poor students. These supports incorporated didactic educational presentations and interpersonal discussions relating to life change and college expectations. The case comprised one pilot administration of the intervention for three student group members. Data was collected from pre/post-intervention resiliency surveys, grade point average comparisons, journal-entry analysis and semi-structured exit interviews. Global university rankings constructed mainly by Western commercial media outlets,like this week’s Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings, seem to be a perennial sourceof interest in Singapore.Yet, rankings have well-known limitations.The Ministry of Education (MOE) and university leaders frequently deny that they motivate policy orare a basis for institutional evaluation. But they do provide a convenient way to ascertain ifuniversities meet our aspirations for world-class status.At the same time, because rankings tend to emphasise research publications of global significance,there is some skepticism among academics and the general public everywhere of their value to localcommunities.

It is common for colleges and universities to include sustainability in their mission statements and strategic plans. On many campuses, however, sustainability is associated with green practices only, rather than the comprehensive integration of social equity, economic, and environmental principles on which the concept was founded. Here, Hooey et al examine the obstacles to the comprehensive adoption of sustainability in institutions of higher education, in general, and to suggest a conceptual framework of a sustainability culture as one most appropriate for the more effective incorporation of comprehensive practices.

As part of a larger mixed-methods study, this article presents findings from research on processes of tenure in Canadian higher education music faculties. The Principle Investigator and three teams of two researchers analyzed the process of tenure at three Canadian institutions to gain insight into how tenure decisions are made in relation to gender and race/ethnicity. The researchers used institutional ethnography, developed by sociologist Dorothy Smith, to examine institutional documents that organize tenure, as well as how documents organize people’s actions, studied through interviews with key stakeholders, such as directors, tenure applicants, and union representatives. This study found that more than 500,000 veterans are currently enrolled in post-secondary education (PSE), with more expected to enter as active duty deployment is scaled back, while there are three major challenges: repurposing their military experience, reconstructing their civilian identity, and navigating PSE. In practice, veterans enrolled in post-secondary education (PSE) should continue utilizing services available to them both on and off campus. In policy, policymakers might consider allocating additional funds to VRCs on university campuses, and the Department of Defense (DoD) might offer additional resources to transitioning service members to help smooth the process. As the national climate and attitudes toward local organic food progressed in the United States, farmers markets, school and community gardens, and campaigns to increase vegetable consumption among children and adolescents skyrocketed. Unfortunately, many communities are beginning to realize disparities exist in poverty-stricken neighborhoods in term of access to fresh produce, education, and food programs This narrative follows a community garden project over three years at the Boys & Girls Club in a semi-rural city in Kentucky. This article looks at the effects of a national policy of research prioritization in the years following Ireland’s economic crisis. A national research prioritization exercise initiated by policymakers redefined the purpose of higher education research, and designed policies in line with this approach. Placing research for enterprise to the fore, it emphasized the economic value that subjects could return on state investments. This article examines the post-crisis policy of prioritization, its relationship with and effects on arts and humanities research, and how the notion of the benefit of research can be broadened while still addressing economic needs.
