The purpose of this project was to develop a social skills curriculum for an effective After School Program for students at risk. To accomplish this purpose, current research and literature related to students at risk, motivational strategies, and alternative programs to assist them were reviewed. Additionally, on site visit to an actual program in the Yakima School District were conducted. At-risk students have a high potential for dropping out of school due to the lack of motivation and other factors. A survey was conducted of 15 migrant students and their parents. Students and their parents were interviewed with a list of questions. These students attended two secondary and two senior high schools in Yakima, Washington. It was determined that because of continued migration of families, students get behind in their studies and therefore lose interest because of the frustration and low self-esteem these students feel. Families still migrate from Yakima, Washington, to other states in search of seasonal work, farm labor is still a way of life for migrant families from schools in the Yakima School District. A study was conducted of several aspects of Washington State Law, including portions of the Revised Code of Washington (RCW), the Washington Administrative Code (WAC), plus an in-depth study on search and seizure rights of the school. The search and seizure study was limited to locker searches by school personnel. The study primarily included relevant aspects of school attendance, bus behavior, corporal punishment, student discipline, student and school property, student dress, search and seizure, and first amendment issues (i.e., publications by students). Pre-Academy Placement In The Washington State Patrol: Factors Associated With Academy And Job Performance, Richard Franklin Hamack

Washington State Patrol Trooper Cadets serve in a number of positions, a number of locations across the state and for varying lengths of time before they are selected to attend the academy. The purpose of the present research was to determine whether these factors were related to subsequent academy performance and job performance.

To that end, 255 cadets hired between 1979 and 1985 were studied. The results indicated that only pre-academy assignment duration was significantly correlated with academy completion and academy performance. Implications for further research and departmental policy are discussed.

The Cost To And The Public Relation Effects Of Federal Education Dollars To The Local School District, Raymond L. Cooper

The costs and public effects of using federal vocational education dollars in the local school district were studied. Twenty-five Washington school districts were randomly selected. Financial data were compiled and a survey distributed to these schools. The results showed increased use of federal vocational monies resulted in increased local administration, as school size decreased use of federal monies decreased, smaller schools spend more money per student, and local advisory committees feel that vocational education needs federal monies.

A Content Analysis Of Public School Education News In An Independently Owned Small Daily Newspaper, Linda L. Mccleary

Newspapers and school districts form a tentative partnership in the dissemination of education news. Subjects preferred by readers have not been reflected in actual education news coverage. Emphasis on utility information at the expense of in-depth writing about what is going on in public education has been standard practice. Content analysis shows that while quantity of education news seems reasonable, the quality of that news fails to transmit to readers the substance of what teachers and children are accomplishing in the public schools.

The Significance Of Projecting Enrollment In Determining School District Apportionment Revenue In Washington State For 1979, Charles M. Plesha

The enrollment of the Sunnyside School District for the 1979-80 school year was estimated. This enrollment figure determined the potential staff allocation size, which in turn determined the 3010 apportionment revenues from the state. Revenues, likewise, determined the district's 00, 30 and 97 programs' staff expenditures. Those predictions were made for the general fund budget only. In addition, other revenues received from the state by Sunnyside School District, which effected the 3010 apportionment account, were explained. Actual historical enrollment data of Sunnyside School District No. 201 were utilized to make all projections as meaningful as possible.

A Curriculum For Death Education In The High School Family Life Program, Karrin J. Lewis

The intent and purpose of this study was to develop curriculum, resources, evaluation and teacher preparation for a death education class, and to teach that curriculum as an elective, semester class for high school students at Washington High School in Tacoma, Washington, in order to demonstrate the feasibility of such a class becoming a regular part of the high school family life program.

A Proposed Classification Schedule For A Curriculum Materials Collection, Robert E. Jones

This paper presents a classification schedule which may be utilized to organize the printed materials found in a curriculum laboratory. The schedule is designed to provide the user with maximum ease of access to the materials contained in the collection and relieves the curriculum librarian of many of the clerical routines common to the processing of new materials. The summary ir.cludcs general recommendations for the application of the schedule and suggestions relating to the organization and administration of the entire collection of printed curriculum materials.

Duration Of State-Dependent Learning Induced By Ncfs-Ecs, Larry Wayne Morris

This paper investigated the course of the state-dependent function induced by NCFS-ECS at 24 hr. time intervals, beginning at 24 or 48 hrs. after NCFS-ECS treatment and terminating at 120 hrs. Results of both experiments indicate a state-dependent effect lasting up to 72 hrs., was absent at the 96 hr. retention test but, apparently returned by the 120 hr. retention test. Recommendations included investigation of fixed time intervals after the 120 hr. retention test.

Recently, however, this method has been questioned by leading special educators. Proponents of segregation of exceptional children admit to inadequacies in the present situation, but they argue that such inadequacies can be remedied and do not justify placing exceptional children in regular classrooms. A study designed: (1) to determine whether the building level Role Definition produced by the ad hoc Joint Standards Committee was representative of the roles performed by the media personnel, and (2) to determine the role duties of district media personnel. The study showed the Role Definition to be representative and the district level proposal emphasizing administrative and coordinative responsibilities. It was recommended a future study be conducted to further the knowledge of the role/duties of district media personnel.

This experiment was designed to determine the effects of free and forced choice within time gradients of five and eight seconds using monetary incentive on a serial learning task. A series of nonsense symbols were successively presented to thirty-six subjects whose task was to learn the serial with the least number of exposures.

Although no one knows how alcohol affects an animal's perception or why it does not appear to affect his retention of time, this study, analyzing the IRTs that were between 10 and 40 seconds, supports the conclusions of previous studies and indicates that the effect of alcohol is much the same for pigeons as it is for rats.

The theory of General Semantics in its present (1935) form is essentially that there exists in the human nervous system a general mechanism, somewhat similar in nature of concept to that type of functioning which we have been calling vaguely, intelligence.
