Over the past few decades, standards-based educational reforms in the U.S. have sought to enhance students’ college and career readiness. The most recent wave of such reforms has emphasized writing as an essential aspect of college readiness and a 21st century skill necessary for success in the workplace. College readiness in the United States is a multifaceted and complex concept, with many contributing factors that often overlap, and many students leave high school and enter college lacking the skills or knowledge necessary to succeed in higher education. This study investigates a set of study skills and self-management skills related to college readiness. I label this set Beyond-the-Classroom Learning Skills (BCLS). I investigate these skills as they relate to factors of cultural capital both in the home and at school. Metaliteracy, originally developed in 2010 as a response to a then-limited conception of information literacy, provides a pedagogical model for thinking and knowing in a social media age that has allowed for the proliferation of false and misleading information. It is vital that individuals be thoughtful and critical consumers of information, and also responsible and ethical information creators and sharers. Metaliterate learners are developed across academic disciplines through teaching and learning that support self-direction, collaboration, participation, and metacognitive thinking. Students’ perspectives on their high school reading experiences can provide great insight into the long term influence literature has in the lives of adolescents; however, students’ voices are seldom prioritized in the current research and in the conversations about curriculum and educational policy. This dissertation presents and analyzes the narratives of high school students nearing graduation as they reflect on the texts and social practices of English. The conceptual framework of this study is informed by Louise Rosenblatt’s transactional theory and Mikhail Bakhtin’s belief that an individual’s interaction with literature inspires rethinking and reevaluation of the reader’s “inconclusive present.”

The increased availability of technology in Western culture has resulted in an increased use of technology among adolescents in both academic and personal settings. In the U.S., adolescents use technology to communicate, access information, create and distribute products on a daily basis. More importantly, this increase in technology has resulted in many more reasons and opportunities to read. This study is an examination of the manner in which educators employ scientific content humor and how that humor is perceived by their students. Content humor is a useful strategy in drawing the attention of students and improving their receptivity toward scientific information. Many educational researchers across the United States have found that inquiry-based learning (IBL) supports the development of deep, meaningful content knowledge. However, integrating inquiry-based learning into classroom practice has been challenging, in part because of contrasting conceptualizations and practices across educational fields. In this paper, we (1) describe differing conceptions of IBL, (2) summarize our own studies of IBL in three fields of education, (3) compare and contrast the processes and purposes of IBL in our studies and fields, and (4) suggest numerous opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations on IBL curriculum, teaching, and research that could bolster its inclusion in K-12 …

This study examined the impact of teachers' characteristics and self-reported practices on students' Algebra achievement while controlling for students' characteristics. This study is based on the secondary analysis of data collected from a nationally representative sample of 9th grade students and their mathematics teachers during the base year of the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS). The purpose of this design-based experiment is two-fold: to see if classroom pedagogies can be developed to improve student achievement in English literature as well as prepare them for 21st Century literacies. Applying Bereiter and Scardamalia's theory of Knowledge Building to English curricula, this experiment tracked the progress of a sixth grade Language Arts class as they engaged in creating theories of literary interpretation supported by Knowledge Forum, a computer-supported, on-line learning environment. The Construction Of Reading Identity In Struggling Middle School Readers, Anna Marie Anatriello Bonafide

Middle school students bring various identities into the classroom including their reading identities, their self concepts concerning their views of themselves as readers. Using identity and psycho-social and socio-cultural theoretical constructs as a foundation, I conducted phenomenological case studies that focused on middle school remedial readers and the means by which their reading identities are constructed within and outside the institution of school. The study investigated in- school factors which impact student reading identities, including interactions with remedial and classroom teachers, as well as out- of- school factors such as family literacy.

Despite a historically unprecedented increase in advocacy for parental involvement in education in recent decades, parents continue to express dissatisfaction with their communication with teachers, while teachers continue to identify their interactions with parents as a source of tension and stress. While the practitioner literature recommends parent-teacher collaboration as an attainable goal, the theoretical literature suggests that, given the structural asymmetries of parent-teacher relationships, open communication may be impossible. Via unstructured interviews with parents and teachers of suburban secondary students, this study explored the structural limitations on authentic parent-teacher communication. The Costs Of Inadequate Education For New York State, Clive R. Belfield

This paper calculates the economic consequences for the state of New York from failing to ensure that all students graduate from high school. The analyses in this report indicate that there are substantial economic benefits from raising the rate of high school graduation for New York state. These benefits can therefore be interpreted as the maximum amount that could be spent by federal and state/local governments on educational programs to improve the graduation rate.

Using various education and census databases 1this policy brief explores the Latino education pipeline in New York State and, where possible, uses disaggregated data to analyze the changes in educational enrollment, attainment, and achievement for Latinos between 1990 and 2000. The education pipeline represents the distribution of Latinos enrolled in pre-school through graduate and professional school in New York State as well as the education attainment levels of the adult population over 25 years of age. Disaggregated data provide the best picture of the educational situation of various Latino subgroups as they relate to each other and other racial/ethnic populations …
