In 2010 the Irish second level mathematics curriculum underwent a period of significant change when a new mathematics curriculum was introduced. Some preliminary research has been carried out into the impact, if any, that this mathematics curriculum is having on students mathematics performance which have suggested that students’ procedural skills are declining year on year however their problem solving skills may have improved (Treacy and Faulkner 2015). Additional research in this area also highlighted that students willingness to engage in problem solving activities may have improved (Prendergast et al 2017). However preliminary analysis on the impact of the reformed mathematics …

Improving The Problem With Problem Solving, Cole Thibert Dec 2017

Improving The Problem With Problem Solving, Cole Thibert

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

As a prospective math educator who will be teaching in the near future, I was concerned with the idea of preparing my future students for college math courses. I decided to research the effects of teaching students how to appropriately use problem solving strategies in math. My research led me towards looking at the benefits of students becoming better problem solvers and how teachers can implement problem solving into their daily lessons.

When this implementation is successful, students can become more independent with their learning, they are able to work and persevere through challenging problems, and they have a greater …

Developing Pbl Kit By Utilizing Blog In Order To Improve Scientific Process And Problem Solving Skills In Physics Learning, Siti Maria Ulva Oct 2017

Developing Pbl Kit By Utilizing Blog In Order To Improve Scientific Process And Problem Solving Skills In Physics Learning, Siti Maria Ulva

Jurnal Inovasi Pendidikan IPA

The study aimed at generating PBL-based learning kit product by utilizing blog, at meeting the criteria of learning kit feasibility, at testing the effectiveness of learning kit that the researcher had developed and at identifying the learning participants' scientific process and problem solving skills. In conducting the study, the researcher implemented the 4-D Model. The learning kit development started involved preliminary study, product design, expert and practitioner test, limited experiment and field experiment. The instruments that had been deployed in conducting the study consisted of validation sheet, learning management observation sheet, student response sheet, teacher interview sheet and learning results …

Pengaruh Pendekatan Pmri Terhadap Motivasi Berprestasi, Kemampuan Pemecahan Masalah, Dan Prestasi Belajar, Wahidin Wahidin, Sugiman Sugiman Dec 2014

Pengaruh Pendekatan Pmri Terhadap Motivasi Berprestasi, Kemampuan Pemecahan Masalah, Dan Prestasi Belajar, Wahidin Wahidin, Sugiman Sugiman

A Medley Of Successful Active-Learning Methods, Sarah Formica Mar 2012

A Medley Of Successful Active-Learning Methods, Sarah Formica

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)

This workshop will present a medley of active-learning methods that have been implemented successfully in both introductory and upper-level physics courses. The participants will engage in methods that include Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT), clicker questions, whiteboard activities, and virtual experiments. The workshop will be designed very much like a class that employs these methods, with a pre-workshop online assignment that is due “Just in Time” before the workshop, and whiteboard activities and clicker questions associated with the active-learning methods. The participants will work in teams to develop some JiTT assignments, clicker questions, and whiteboard activities that they could use in their …

Methodology And/Or Technology: Making Difference In Improving Students' Problem Solving Skills, Zdeslav Hrepic, Katherine Lodder, Kimberly Shaw Mar 2012

Methodology And/Or Technology: Making Difference In Improving Students' Problem Solving Skills, Zdeslav Hrepic, Katherine Lodder, Kimberly Shaw

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019)

Wirelessly networked, in-class computing opens a wide array of possibilities for active instructional methodologies (Hrepic, Rebello, & Zollman, 2009). Earlier studies showed a substantial potential that the pen input computers combined with interactive software like DyKnow (www.dyknow.com) may have in facilitating students’ problem solving ability. The session has two goals. The first one is to demonstrate the instructor-student classroom interaction dynamics enabled or facilitated by DyKnow software and pen-input computers. The second one is to present selected research findings associated with student learning while using this technology. The most recent of our studies was to isolate the effect of the …
