The College Pedro Ii And The Modernization Of The Secondary School Curriculum In Imperial Brazil, Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

This work examines the role of the curriculum of the College Pedro II to modernize secondary school education in Brazil from 1838 to 1889. It argues that the Imperial Government followed two lines of action in achieving this goal. First, the Court sought to make education in the College exemplary by continuously introducing curriculum models and course content similar to that found in the best schools in Europe. Second, it enacted legislation that induced schools to adopt the program of studies of the College. Because the constitution prohibited the Central Government from directly effecting change in provincial schools, the Court …

The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) Program at the University of Arizona exposes students to many different aspects of teaching an undergraduate mathematics course. The program's breadth generates various qualitative and quantitative benefits. Some of these benefits are that the UTAs improve their mathematics and communications skills, instructors have additional support both inside and outside the classroom, and mathematics students in classes with UTAs enjoy their mathematics classes more than students in similar classes without UTAs.

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …

In 1993, the State of Massachusetts enacted the Educational Reform Act to improve student performance and to increase school accountability. One of the curriculum frameworks of this initiative is titled Science and Technology/Engineering. One of the strands within that framework, Technology/Engineering, outlines standards in seven curriculum areas to be assessed at the high school level on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). This framework is somewhat controversial but supported by numerous surveys focusing on national needs. The movement of traditional Industrial Arts programs to a Technology/Engineering approach in both delivery and content has created a new set of problems with …
