Building Community, Competency, And Creativity In Calculus 2: Summary Of A Pilot Year Of Project Implementation, Jennifer Beichman, Candice R. Price

Feminist Pedagogy

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, instructional modes at our institution moved to fully online and remote, then fully online but on campus, and back to in-person learning in fall 2021. To combat perceived issues in student engagement, we piloted using group projects in place of exams at the natural content break points in Calculus 2.

Development Of A Web-Based Worksheet With A Project-Based Learning Model Assisted By Geogebra, Effie Efrida Muchlis, Nanang Priatna, Jarnawi Afgani Dahlan Dec 2021

Development Of A Web-Based Worksheet With A Project-Based Learning Model Assisted By Geogebra, Effie Efrida Muchlis, Nanang Priatna, Jarnawi Afgani Dahlan

Jurnal Riset Pendidikan Matematika

Previous studies on the use of GeoGebra in mathematics learning were more focused on implementation and effectiveness in learning outcomes. However, not many studies focus on providing opportunities to students to explore GeoGebra to find concepts in plane geometry through developing an application. Therefore, this research and development applied a 4D model to produce a web-based worksheet using project-based learning (PjBL) assisted by GeoGebra that was valid, practical, and effective in the plane geometry course. The web-based worksheet intended to facilitate students to be independent, creative, and able to find the concepts in the plane geometry course through exploration activities …

Environmental Explorations: Integrating Project-Based Learning And Civic Engagement Through An Afterschool Program, Rachel Farmer, Nakayla Greene, Kristen H. Perry, Cindy Jong Nov 2019

Environmental Explorations: Integrating Project-Based Learning And Civic Engagement Through An Afterschool Program, Rachel Farmer, Nakayla Greene, Kristen H. Perry, Cindy Jong

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study examined the Community Super Investigators Club, through which we aimed to apply mathematics and literacy skills by using project-based learning (PBL) to investigate elementary students’ interest in learning how to improve the environment for animals. PBL is a teaching method used to improve critical thinking skills around a project that is based on students’ questions. The study used a mixed-method design to examine the following research questions: How do students engage in PBL on topics relevant to their community in an afterschool club? How can critical math and literacy skills be integrated with community engagement? How did the …

Exploring Authenticity Through An Engineering-Based Context In A Project-Based Learning Mathematics Activity, Bradley Bowen, Bryanne Peterson Nov 2018

Exploring Authenticity Through An Engineering-Based Context In A Project-Based Learning Mathematics Activity, Bradley Bowen, Bryanne Peterson

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

As education works to reconnect student learning to something more than standardized testing, project-based learning (PBL) has become a popular way to increase student engagement while providing more authentic applications of student knowledge. While research regarding PBL is bountiful, little has been done to connect this body of research with student perceptions regarding its classroom application, especially concerning authenticity and student engagement. This research focuses on the topic of ‘‘task authenticity’’ as a means to improve student outcomes. Two groups of seventh-grade students were presented the concept of slope and y-intercept in the context of engineering-based activities. The research …

Problem-Based Learning In K–8 Mathematics And Science Education: A Literature Review, Joi Merritt, Mi Yeon Lee, Peter Rillero, Barbara M. Kinach May 2017

Problem-Based Learning In K–8 Mathematics And Science Education: A Literature Review, Joi Merritt, Mi Yeon Lee, Peter Rillero, Barbara M. Kinach

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This systematic literature review was conducted to explore the effectiveness of problem-based and project-based learning (PBL) implemented with students in early elementary to grade 8 (ages 3–14) in mathematics and science classrooms. Nine studies met the following inclusion criteria: (a) focus on PBL, (b) experimental study, (c) kindergarten to grade 8 level, and (d) focus on mathematics or science content. For these studies, we examined: the definitions of PBL used, the components of PBL explicitly identified as salient to student learning, and the effectiveness of PBL. This review found that although there is no consistent definition of PBL, PBL is …

The Relationship Between Project-Based Learning And Rigor In Stem-Focused High Schools, Julie Edmunds, Nina Arshavsky, Elizabeth Glennie, Karen Charles, Olivia Rice Jan 2017

The Relationship Between Project-Based Learning And Rigor In Stem-Focused High Schools, Julie Edmunds, Nina Arshavsky, Elizabeth Glennie, Karen Charles, Olivia Rice

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Project-based learning (PjBL) is an approach often favored in STEM classrooms, yet some studies have shown that teachers struggle to implement it with academic rigor. This paper explores the relationship between PjBL and rigor in the classrooms of ten STEM-oriented high schools. Utilizing three different data sources reflecting three different perceptions—student surveys, teacher logs, and classroom observations—the study examines the extent to which PjBL and rigor co-occur. Across all three measures, the results show that use of PjBL is associated with higher levels of rigor. However, the study also shows that academic rigor can be present in the absence of …

Project-Based Learning And Design-Focused Projects To Motivate Secondary Mathematics Students, Kelly W. Remijan Dec 2016

Project-Based Learning And Design-Focused Projects To Motivate Secondary Mathematics Students, Kelly W. Remijan

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

This article illustrates how mathematics teachers can develop design-focused projects, related to project-based learning, to motivate secondary mathematics students. With first-hand experience as a secondary mathematics teacher, I provide a series of steps related to the engineering design process, which are helpful to teachers in developing design-focused projects, describe various projects that have been developed and implemented within my classroom, and share project artifacts illustrated by pictures, student work, and student comments. Referring to the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation and reflecting upon personal observations, student outcomes, and student comments, I provide personal insight on how design-focused projects can be …

Comparing Technology-Supported Teacher Education Curricular Models For Enhancing Statistical Content Knowledge, Dionne Cross Francis, Rick Hudson, Crystal Vesperman, Arnulfo Perez Mar 2014

Comparing Technology-Supported Teacher Education Curricular Models For Enhancing Statistical Content Knowledge, Dionne Cross Francis, Rick Hudson, Crystal Vesperman, Arnulfo Perez

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Recent calls have been made to enhance and extend the statistical experiences of K-12 students. However, to ensure that such goals are met, teachers also need to develop deep conceptual understanding and pedagogical content knowledge that are essential to statistical thinking and reasoning. In this regard, over the past two decades, leading thinkers and professional organizations had advocated that teaching and curricula should be focused and organized around problem solving. In this paper we describe three such technology-supported curricula—a project-based learning (PjBL) unit, problem-solving activities (PS) unit, and a model-eliciting activities (MEA) unit—that align with this perspective and discuss the …
