This article is geared toward mathematics educators in hopes that they can ultimately excite young people about mathematics, encourage students to be confident in their ability to solve problems, understand mathematical concepts, and see math as a human endeavor. This study examined the potential relationship of accessible hands-on science learning experiences to the development of positive beliefs concerning one’s capacity to function in the sciences and motivation to consider science as a college major and career. Findings from Likert survey items given before and after engaging in accessible hands-on science laboratories show that students who were blind or had low vision (BLV) were more likely to agree with the following items after engaging in accessible science experiences: 1) I plan on enrolling as a science major in college; 2) My educational experiences, so far, have given me the …

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas virtual lab berbasis STEM sebagai media praktikum alternatif dalam meningkatkan literasi sains siswa dengan perbedaan gender. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain one Group pretest-posttest yang terdiri dari kelas 7B dengan jumlah siswa 29 orang perempuan dan kelas 7D dengan jumlah siswa 30 orang laki-laki. Teknik pengambilan data menggunakan metode observasi, angket, dan tes. Efektivitas virtual lab berbasis STEM dianalisis dengan Independent-samples t test kemudian dihitung nilai effect size. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengaruh gender siswa terhadap literasi sains melalui pembelajaran project based learning (PjBL) yang diintegrasikan dengan science, technology, engineering, dan mathematics (STEM) pada tema pencemaran udara. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah pre-eksperimen dengan desain The static Group Pretest-Posttest Design yang dilaksanakan di kelas VII SMP Islam Terpadu di kabupaten Sukabumi sebanyak 57 siswa yang terdiri dari kelas laki-laki (29 orang) dan kelas perempuan (28 orang). Stemming On Stem: A Stem Education Framework For Students With Disabilities, Jiwon Hwang, Jonte C. Taylor

There has been increased attention paid to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics also known as STEM. The focus on STEM has been both educational and occupational. Unfortunately, students with disabilities perform below their peers without disabilities in math and science. The authors discuss issues related to STEM and students with disabilities. These issues include (1) traditional views of STEM education, (2) the importance of STEM education, and (3) students with disabilities performance in STEM. The authors posit a framework for STEM education for students with disabilities and promote the incorporation of the arts to increase students’ STEM knowledge and achievement.

Large data sets offer opportunities for graduate students to become involved in meaningful research, but also comes with a unique set of challenges. This paper seeks to examine that relationship through utilizing the High School Longitudinal Study 2009 – representative of US ninth graders in 2009 (n = 21,444) – to examine a set of research questions about STEM interest and preparation amongst secondary students. Student researchers identified gaps in plans and outcomes with regards to race, gender, exceptionalities, and socioeconomic status. Findings indicated inequities that affect STEM outcomes. The purpose of the study was to examine the career experiences of African American female engineers and explore their challenges and support systems during their career development. This qualitative study utilized a life history approach and was designed using basic interpretive inquiry. There were nine African American female participants in the study who currently worked in an engineering field within an engineering industry. Using an ecological model to ground the study, the findings were categorized as macrosystem (environment) or microsystem (individual) factors. This report details the findings from initial research seeking to improve the pedagogical confidence of pre-service STEM teachers by encouraging emotional literacy in the form of affect awareness. The report discusses how affect was measured for the study, what the affect outcomes were and how these measures are conceptually related to improving confidence for the pre-service teachers (PSTs). Findings indicate enhanced emotional feedback enabled the PSTs to analyse, understand and make use of affect information to reflect on their teaching confidence overall. Ongoing research will need to address the issue of negative affect awareness in teacher training, and strategies for …
