Growth Mindset And Its Impact On Math Performance In Third Grade, Alicia Wenger

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research is to describe the effects of the application of daily growth mindset lessons upon the accuracy and level of work completion in math assessments. Participants included the researcher’s class of 13 third grade students from a small rural Midwest school district. Students participated in a daily growth mindset lesson intervention for a period of 4 weeks. Data was collected using math assessments and growth mindset surveys. The results concluded that although students can develop an improvement in mindset with intervention, it does not always directly correlate to the improvement of math accuracy and work …

The Importance Of Teaching And Learning Patterning In Early Math Education, Jan M. Hessman Oct 2020

The Importance Of Teaching And Learning Patterning In Early Math Education, Jan M. Hessman

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review explores the importance of patterning in early math education. Patterning skills are a unique predictor of future success in mathematics. With the Common Core not addressing patterning as a standard in early math education, many educators have come to believe that the importance of patterning is not significant. However, past and present research studies have yielded convincing results that demonstrate the importance of including patterning in early math curriculums. Incorporating patterning into young students' math experiences requires several specific instructional strategies to optimize the benefits of learning patterning skills.

Effectiveness Of Number Sense Instruction And Memorization Of Math Facts, Katie Barnes

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Math instruction is taught using a variety of methods and strategies. This literature review compares two strategies of math instruction: the instruction of number sense versus the process of memorizing math facts for students. The literature review identifies various math strategies for both number sense instruction and memorization of math facts. This literature review synthesizes studies published in scholarly journals on the topics of number sense, memorizing math facts, timed tests, math anxiety, and teacher perspectives. Studies from this review reveal that number sense instruction is beneficial for student learning to build the foundation for future mathematical knowledge before the …

Studies show that mathematic fact fluency serves as the foundation for advanced math skills. The review identifies three mathematic fact fluency interventions that educators can implement in their classroom. The research focuses on the cover, copy, compare intervention, as well as taped problems and computer-based programs, specifically Reflex. The data indicates that all three math interventions are effective in providing students with appropriate and sufficient support needed at their current academic level. Further research needs …

Instructional Coaching And Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices, Hillary J. Gingerich Apr 2020

Instructional Coaching And Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices, Hillary J. Gingerich

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This classroom action research project compares the impact of instructional coaching with the focus on effective mathematics teaching strategies as outlined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in the text Principles to Action. Two 3rd grade classrooms were studied with one being a control classroom and the other whose teacher enrolled in a 6-week coaching cycle focusing on student centered goals around two effective mathematics teaching practices. Those effective mathematics teaching practices are posing purposeful questions and facilitating meaningful mathematics discourse. A pretest and posttest from FastBridge’s MCAP was used to determine the growth over the 6-week study …
