The essence of public land stewardship lies far beyond the words, numbers, and pictures compiled in this project compendium. During the past seven years, many people have gained greater appreciation of the discovered and yetto‐ be discovered treasures held within the Southern Nevada public lands. People have had the opportunity to learn about and make a first‐time connection with nature and the community within which they live. Some participants realized dynamic and everlasting changes in their lives as a result of their new experiences and insights.

  • One Families in Nature event was held, benefitting approximately 40 people.
  • A media campaign has been developed for the Nevada Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights.
  • A total of18 people are participating in the fourth cohort of the Nevada State Certification in Environmental Education and Interpretation.
  • An RV has been purchased for the SNAP Mobile Exhibit and is in process of being retrofitted.
  • Forever Earth was scheduled for 16 days and benefited 425 individuals.

Highlights of the university’s focused efforts during the past three months include the following:

  • Two Families in Nature events were held, benefitting approximately 140 people
  • The Families in Nature program was honored at the Nevada Recreation & Park Society 2011 Conference (March 16-18). It was chosen both as Program of the Year and Best Program for Children
  • More than 500 4th-6th grade students participated in Wilderness Education activities and saw the “Art of Nature” Wilderness presentation
  • The Nevada Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights was promoted through 11 outreach booths and events
  • A total of 17 teachers participated in a workshop …

Part of every UNLV engineering student’s academic experience, the senior design project stimulates engineering innovation and entrepreneurship. Each student in their senior year chooses, plans, designs, and prototypes a product in this required element of the curriculum. A capstone to the student’s educational career, the senior design project encourages the student to use everything learned in the engineering program to create a practical, real world solution to an engineering challenge. The senior design competition helps focus the senior students in increasing the quality and potential for commercial application for their design projects. As the United States dramatically expands wind energy deployment, the industry is challenged with developing a skilled workforce and addressing public resistance. Wind Powering America’s Wind for Schools project addresses these issues by:
• Developing Wind Application Centers (WACs) at universities; WAC students assist in implementing school wind turbines and participate in wind courses
• Installing small wind turbines at community “host” schools
• Implementing teacher training with interactive curricula at each host school.

Highlights of the university’s focused efforts during the past three months include the following:

  • One Families in Nature events was held, benefitting approximately 25 people.
  • Presentations were given about the Nevada Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights to senior staff at Clark County Parks and Recreation and to the Southern Nevada Regional Open Space and Trails working group.
  • A total of 12 people completed all requirements and successfully graduated from the Nevada State Certification in Environmental Education and Interpretation program.
  • Forever Earth was scheduled for 29 days and served 975 people.
