Development Of K-12 Science Handbook For The Thorp School District, Sim Egbert Dec 1982

Development Of K-12 Science Handbook For The Thorp School District, Sim Egbert

All Graduate Projects

A handbook was created for the Thorp School District to provide teachers with science goals and objectives for each grade level. A science philosophy, a sample evaluation sheet, elementary science scope and sequence, a list of current textbooks, and the sequences of science classes were also presented in the handbook. Curriculum guides from several districts were studied before the goals and objectives were written for the handbook. The research on the needs of a curriculum and the past and current trends in science curriculum was reviewed. The literature regarding science curriculum supported the development of the handbook. Recommendations were proposed.

The Church, Education And Third World Development, William W. Cobern Dec 1982

The Church, Education And Third World Development, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

The Third World is the world of underdeveloped and developing nations. As one insightful African noted the preferred term once was "underdeveloped" but now the more positive "developing" is used (Yoloye, 1980, p.vii). Both of these terms were originally used by Westerners to describe how far up the technological/industrial ladder non-Western nations have climbed. One might argue about the appropriateness of judging other cultures by one's own standard. In doing so one assumes at least tacitly if not overtly that his own culture is the superior one. At best this leads to paternalism towards the people of the culture in …

A Comparison Of Hutchings' Low Stress Algorithm And Three Other Methods In Multidigit Multiplication For Calculation Speed And Accuracy, John Byron Connors Aug 1982

A Comparison Of Hutchings' Low Stress Algorithm And Three Other Methods In Multidigit Multiplication For Calculation Speed And Accuracy, John Byron Connors

Masters Theses

High achieving fifth grade students were taught three alternate multiplication algorithms: Hutchings low stress, Gelocian lattice, and partial products (distributive algorithm using indentation). The two independent variables were the four algorithms (three alternate plus traditional) and three problem array sizes (3 x 2, 3, and 4 factors). The three dependent variables were percent accuracy, rate correct, and rate incorrect. A multi-element manipulation design across phases was used varying type of calculation procedure within sessions and type of problem array across sessions. Results showed that all three alternate algorithms were superior to the traditional algorithm on most dependent variable measures. Pre …

A Syllabus Of Enrichment Activities To Enhance Content Area Reading In Science, Lynn Carol Swanson

All Graduate Projects

A syllabus of 65 enrichment activities was developed to accompany the third grade Addison Wesley science text. The activities were designed to aid children in transferring study skills, context clues, comprehension and vocabulary from reading instruction to content material. Objectives and teaching strategies were developed to accompany each of 26 skills. Suggested vocabulary activities and materials were included. Each of the activities focused on helping students to transfer necessary study skills, context clues, and comprehension skills to the science text in order to improve their proficiency to read and use the text effectively.

A Comparison Of The Hutchings "Low-Stress”, Fulkerson Tens Method, And Conventional Addition Algorithms For Speed, Accuracy And Preference With Regular Education Students, Gregory N. Vaughan Apr 1982

A Comparison Of The Hutchings "Low-Stress”, Fulkerson Tens Method, And Conventional Addition Algorithms For Speed, Accuracy And Preference With Regular Education Students, Gregory N. Vaughan

Masters Theses

The differential calculation power (rate and accuracy) of three separate procedures for addition was investigated. The Hutchings' "low-stress", Fulkerson tens method. and conventional algorithms were compared on 5x7 array addition problems. The subjects were six male first semester third grade students approximately eight and one half years of age. A multielement design was used in which the three algorithms composed the multiple elements. During the last three daily sessions the students were given free choice of algorithms to use. The results indicated that the Hutchings "Low-stress" algorithm was superior to the Fulkerson tens method, which in turn was superior to …

A Component Analysis Of Hutchings' Low-Stress Subtraction Algorithm With Third Grade Students, Karen J. Lascurettes Apr 1982

A Component Analysis Of Hutchings' Low-Stress Subtraction Algorithm With Third Grade Students, Karen J. Lascurettes

Masters Theses

This study measured the effects of what was hypothesized to be the major functional component difference between the Hutchings' low-stress subtraction algorithm and the traditional algorithm: the non-alternation of regrouping and subtraction steps. A multiple baseline design was used with two groups of third grade students. Dependent measures included rate correct, rate incorrect, percent accuracy, and types of errors made. Statistical analysis of the data failed to support the position that the non-alternation of regrouping and subtracting steps in subtraction yielded superior performances with these students. Future research in this area might investigate the inclusion of zeroes in the minuends …

Strategies For Improving Student Abilities To Comprehend Science Textbook Material, Kathleen H. Coyne

All Graduate Projects

Fifty-five supplementary lessons were developed to be used in conjunction with a science text entitled Introductory Physical Science (1976). The lessons consisted of the following comprehension strategies: (a) structured overviews, (b) cloze procedures, (c) locational skill strategies, (d) vocabulary reinforcement strategies, and (e) reading guides. The lessons were prepared to enrich and improve the reading and understanding of the science textbook.

The Atoms Family - Or - Ionic Man, James Novotony

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since concepts involving invisible, intangible particles are especially difficult for junior high students to understand, how does a student know that atoms, molecules, electrons, and ions really exist? Are these particles just the figment of someone's imagination?

I decided some years ago that students needed more than an explanation of a concept involving atomic particles. Pictures are helpful to serve as an extension of a verbal teaching method.

Osmosis: A Different Approach, Dennis Sievers Jan 1982

Osmosis: A Different Approach, Dennis Sievers

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Traditional experiments on osmosis usually include a study of the glucose-water experiment but lack a connection to a living system. This is a fine experiment but fails to give students a true picture of what is occurring in a living system. The following experiments describe a method of examining osmosis and some factors that can have an effect on it in a living blood cell.
