Science teachers are receiving professional development (PD) since the introduction of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in 2013. Following PD, teachers are facing several challenges while attempting to implement NGSS in their classroom, some of which include budget constraints, administrative support, and student preparedness (Banilower et al., 2013). This quantitative research study examined the relationship between science teachers’ science education experiences (high school, undergraduate science courses, teacher education program science methods courses, in-service teaching, and professional development) regarding exposure to student-centered labs and science teacher self-efficacy in teaching student-centered labs. According to recent national and state level assessments, only about one-third of Michigan students are proficient in secondary math. This mixed methods study contributes to the pro-environmental behavior literature by introducing the concept of environmental science capital to explore the factors influencing pro-environmental behavior in rural youth. This study’s proposed theory of change attempts to build upon the Kollmus and Agyeman model of pro-environmental behavior by theorizing that environmental science capital is the “missing middle” needed to overcome the barriers to pro-environmental behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in the Spatial- Temporal (ST) Math program as an intervention increased students’ positive motivation and engagement in two Northwest Arkansas schools as measured by the Motivation Engagement Scale (MES), a self-reported survey. School A participated in ST Math, and School B did not participate in ST Math. Students from all tier levels of instruction composed the sample of 160 fourth-grade students (80 participating and 80 not participating) and 160 fifth-grade students (80 participating and 80 not participating). Access to advanced-level science courses can be difficult for those students who start in a tracked system. Tracking is an educational practice where students are assigned to different classes based on ability level. African American and Hispanic students are most at risk since most minority students are found in the lower level track (Burris, 2014; Mehan, 2015; Oakes, 2005).
