For students who are not chemistry majors, but who are on a career track requiring four chemistry courses, taking the final reactivity chemistry course (CHEM 251) for pre-health students can be daunting. For this reason, this research is focused on the CHEM 251 course at The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University (CSBSJU) which is one of the four required chemistry courses for pre-medicine and some pre-physician assistant students, and all chemistry and biochemistry majors. This exploratory study examines the instructional practices of two-year institutions located in rural areas during the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and the two academic years that follow. Since the virus commonly known as COVID-19 first made its way to the United States in March 2020, three classes of community college students have had an introduction to higher education unlike any other in living memory. The alignment of curriculum content with standards is a quality improvement measure used to identify gaps or overlaps in academic content. Curriculum mapping results, while commonly used, are rarely reported. Undergraduate faculty mapped 11 courses in a single timepoint using a web-based curriculum mapping tool. Quantitative results were calculated and compared to defined client needs categories. A validation analysis was performed by mapping one course in triplicate. Faculty feedback following the exercise was obtained by online survey. Three client needs categories were determined to be marginally out of range in the initial analysis of the quantitative mapping data. The curriculum …

Students wrote literature reviews about evidence-based practices, then translating information for parent audiences. Through the Honors Scholars’ Collaborative, our class, under the guidance of Dr. Heather Finch, has attempted to solve the problem of biased and potentially unhelpful course evaluations. We identified this problem through personal experience with feeling unmotivated to complete school-issued course evaluations and mistrust in other review sources. ABA accreditation standards now require law schools to provide education and training on racism, bias, and cross-cultural competence. This seemingly straightforward mandate raises numerous questions as schools plan for and implement compliance. Here, I articulate and approach these compliance questions using insights drawn from critical theory—which supplies helpful guidance for responses and ultimately antiracism legal education that is more than minimalist. Armed with critical insights, lawyers are better equipped to contribute to the struggle to eradicate systemic social ills in law and society.

As higher education institutions focus on improving and conveying our commitments to inclusive excellence, it becomes necessary to self-assess our communications. This work describes the development and pilot testing of a simple tool to assess the inclusive excellence of print or electronic materials produced at any scope – from individual department or unit through institution-wide uses. The tool considers several areas of inclusivity at once, allowing stakeholders to identify strengths and weaknesses in their communications and move towards continuous improvement.

Nurses provide care to clients in complex situations. Nurses entering practice need greater confidence and skills to make sound clinical judgment decisions when caring for clients. A question arises: Do structured clinical judgment activities based on the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) improve students’ clinical judgment skills throughout a semester simulation and clinical rotation? A literature search of EBSCOhost, CINAHL, Next Generation: NCLEX News, and article reference lists were used. Peer-reviewed articles published from 2018-2023 were reviewed, resulting in 13 articles being selected. The project focuses on implementing preceptor education for those within the dedicated education unit clinical model and its correlation to increased student and preceptor satisfaction. Implementing Dedicated Education Units (DEU) aims to increase satisfaction within the learning environment, thus creating greater student engagement in the clinical experience. Nursing students who participated in the DEU model report positive learning experiences, increased self-confidence, supportive learning environments, teamwork and communication, and decreased cognitive loads and stress levels after participating in the DEU clinical experience.
