Background: Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pumps have been used for management of spasticity and dystonia There is limited data on immediate post-operative complications such as GI adverse events after surgery for ITB pump related procedures. This study aimed to compare patients who underwent a pre-operative bowel cleanout to those who did not and the relationship with post-operative nausea, vomiting and constipation requiring an escalation of their bowel regimen.

Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Setting: Pediatric acute care hospital.

Participants: All patients who underwent new ITB pump and/or catheter placement from January 2015-December 2022.

Background: Chiari II malformation is relatively common with an incidence of about 1 in 1000 live birth and is associated with reduced life expectancy. Characteristic features are beaked midbrain, downward displacement of the tonsils, and cerebellar vermis, and spinal myelomeningocele that can be associated with hydrocephalus needing ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP shunt). Mortality is about 50-70% if not recognized early. Survivors have high morbidity and develop neurologic abnormalities and significant developmental delays. Long-term outcome is poorly understood.

Student feedback indicated difficulty applying Occupational Therapy values such as “participation in meaningful occupations” into clinical interventions. Two instructors of a components-based course and a theory course collaborated to link practical OT interventions to conceptual OT models. Use of a model for transfer of tacit knowledge was utilized. Each instructor kept a reflective diary. An iterative process for a semester attempted to transfer learned explicit knowledge into an integrated intuitive ‘art of the therapy’ which incorporated Occupational Science core concepts. Worksheets were developed to make the pathway more explicit. By semester’s end, students completed a comprehensive plan for client care.

In January 2018, the Lynchburg College Doctor of Physical Therapy program sent a group of ten first- and second-year students to St. Lucia to provide therapy services to children in need across the island in five different special education schools. The purpose of this study is to document and statistically analyze a protocol-driven cultural competency training session, combined with hands-on culturally diverse experiences, in order to improve health care students’ cultural competence. This study is focused on undergraduate students at James Madison University who are seniors in the pre occupational therapy major or social work major.
