This paper examines the new literary format of video games and argues that video games can be studied as their own text in the English Language Arts classroom through the lenses of film theory, narratology, and ludology. In order to be precise, the paper offers explicit connections to each of the reading and writing standards supplied by the Common Core State Standards. The paper then suggests that video games as literature can offer opportunities and skills beyond what traditional literature can, including problem solving and communication skills. Due to a lack of research on the topic and events of 2020, this thesis aims to learn how professors teach multicultural literature to traditional undergraduate students and how students respond to these courses. I focus on pedagogical scholarship that notes the structure, challenges, and impact of teaching this genre in K-12 and higher education classrooms. My conclusions provide educators with a repertoire of teaching strategies, materials, and student feedback to help students critically respond to living in a multicultural nation and world. While participation has been linked to achievement in the classroom, various external factors can change students’ willingness to participate. In this study the researcher sought to discover what participation looks like in regards to one of these factors, language. Additionally the researcher wanted to discover what students and teachers in a bilingual program thought of their own participation in regards to language.
