Of the 27.5% of returning citizens who recidivated in Ohio in 2015, how many re-offended because they felt they had no other way of supporting themselves or their families?

  • For over 40 years, Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry (Cleveland, OH) has been providing re-entry services, including job training, for individuals returning from incarceration.
  • 90% of those who graduate from LMM's job readiness programs, many of whom have a history with the criminal justice system, go on to find long-term employment.
  • Yet for those recently released from prison, waiting to earn an income until completing a training program can be a significant challenge.

Research shows that more than 92°/o of our individuals who complete the residential program stay out of the criminal justice system after one year. As part of Alvis Residential programs, a comprehensive range of evidence-based programs and services are delivered to help individuals who are transitioning from the corrections system back into the community. Alvis provides these services in a safe, supportive environment, so that individuals receive the guidance they need to navigate the challenges of finding employment and reconnecting with family members.

Thomson and Parsons discuss Parsons' work with the Elsinore-Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice at the State Correctional Institute in Pittsburgh. Parsons describes inmate involvement with the think tank, courses the group designed, essays written by the men imprisoned, and she defines restorative justice.

Recidivism rates are high in most Western countries and, as prisons in these countries become overcrowded, the resources meant to enhance reintegration of inmates into society can be inadequate or nonexistent. On the other hand, Norway has one of the lowest recidivism rates among Western nations, at approximately 20 percent. Norway also has, along with other Scandinavian countries, a unique approach to its prison system. This paper discusses the exceptionalism associated with Norway's prison system and explores the reasons behind its low recidivism rates, with a focus on the encouragement of reintegration of inmates into society. By partnering with correctional facilities, institutions of higher education are well positioned to create shared learning communities that provide profound educational experiences. Portland State University offers several courses involving university/corrections partnerships; these courses meet inside carceral institutions. This article highlights three of these courses and the shared learning spaces they involve. We address the negotiating of these partnerships, development of the courses, and the creation, maintenance and outcomes of these complex learning environments.
