Reflections On The Case Study: James Tuttle Vs. Lakeland Community College, Harlan Stelmach
Reflections On The Case Study: James Tuttle Vs. Lakeland Community College, Harlan Stelmach
Harlan Stelmach
As a Chair of a large academic department that supervises over thirty adjunct faculty members, I have sympathy with all the parties in this case. I have sympathy for administrators trying to maintain academic oversight of many adjunct faculty members who are often just on campus to teach their courses. I have sympathy for adjunct faculty who are under paid and often do the bulk of teaching at the general education level with very little guidance on the mission and values of an institution. As long as their student evaluations do not cause alarm, benign neglect often defines their relationship …

“Escándalo Público”: La Destitución De Miguel Ángel Beltrán, Las Últimas Investigaciones De Michel Foucault Y La Autonomía Universitaria ("Public Scandal": The Dismissal Of Miguel Angel Beltrán, Michel Foucault's Final Lectures And The Principle Of Autonomous University), Andrés Henao Castro

How The Conception Of Knowledge Influences Our Educational Practices: Toward A Philosophical Understanding Of Epistemology In Education, James Magrini
James M Magrini
This paper explores how the conception and valuation of the knowledge within our educational practices determines the planning, writing, and implementation of the curriculum. There is a pressing need for educators to philosophically and systematically understand the relationship between the foundational epistemological beliefs that ground a curriculum and its relationship to forming the notions of competency, pedagogy, and the methods for evaluating and assessing student progress. These issues are not only relevant, but crucial when attempting to justify a particular conception of education, which relates directly to the student's potential for intellectual growth and social development. It may be argued …

This article presents a broad view of issues related to faculty diversity. Headings include Demographics, The Growth of Faculty Diversity as an Ideal, and Barriers in the Academic Workplace. Race, ethnicity, and gender are the most common characteristics that institutions observe in order to measure faculty diversity. An even broader approach to faculty diversity involves age, socioeconomic background, national origin, sexual orientation, and diverse learning styles and opinions. Until the latter part of the twentieth century, the professoriate in the western world was composed almost exclusively of privileged, heterosexual males of Caucasian descent. Higher education institutions are generally concerned with …
