This paper provides a vision for working towards relationally accountable transformative reconciliation in nursing education. The author shares the teaching gifts she has received from Indigenous Knowledge Holders and through her experience of co-facilitating Indigenous led, land based, wellness-oriented field schools. It offers a way forward for nurse educators who are searching for ways to responsibly and meaningfully address colonial harms and actively engage in ethical, accountable and respectful relations with Indigenous People and Knowledges. The vision starts with transforming ourselves through bearing witness and experiencing the vulnerability of cultural humility. It requires us to transform our relationships through reframing …

Innovations in Health Sciences Education Journal
Due to workforce demands, new undergraduate nurses are hired directly into fast-paced units and are expected to manage complex patients with rapidly changing conditions and respond to time-sensitive situations. It is important for nurse educators to prepare undergraduate nurses for transition into clinical practice upon graduation. Simulation has been a valuable tool to provide experiential learning and promote clinical decision-making. The next iteration of improving clinical simulation as an experiential learning modality for nursing students is Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR): a realistic, immersive simulation in a 3-dimensional environment that is experienced by body movements and hand controllers. IVR can incorporate …
Canadian Nursing Students’ Understanding, And Comfort Levels Related To Medical Assistance In Dying, Shelley E. Canning Dr., Christine Drew
Canadian Nursing Students’ Understanding, And Comfort Levels Related To Medical Assistance In Dying, Shelley E. Canning Dr., Christine Drew
Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Background: Recent legislation regarding medical assistance in dying (MAiD) has important implications for nursing practice and education. It follows that Canadian nursing programmes must integrate theoretical and clinical practice related to MAiD in current curricula. Understanding student knowledge and comfort regarding MAiD provides important direction for developing curricula.
Purpose: To explore the understanding and comfort levels of BSN students regarding MAiD.
Methods: An applied health research methodology drawing on Interpretive Description was employed. Forty BSN students were surveyed before receiving MAiD education delivered through coursework and clinical experiences; 32 students participated in post intervention surveys; six students participated in individual …

Pharmacogenetic testing is used to tailor medication recommendations based on an individual's genetic makeup. Increased precision in prescribing medication through the use of genetics leads to a reduction in adverse drug reactions resulting in decreased morbidity and mortality. Due to the noted benefits to patient health outcomes and reduction in healthcare costs, a growing number of Canadian health centers and community pharmacies are beginning to offer pharmacogenetic testing. Previous studies indicate that Canadian nurses have minimal education in genomics; however, there has been an increase in attention to nursing roles in the implementation of genomic health practices in recent years. …

Exploring Compassion For The Community And Diversity Through Nursing Experiential Learning, Jaime Sinutko, Nadine Wodwaski, Brooklin Adams
Experiential Learning & Teaching in Higher Education
Background: The aim of Jesuit education is total growth leading to action (Jesuit Institute, 2014a), plus higher Jesuit education seeks to transform students through examining the world around them. The promotion of experiential learning is noted in Ignatian Pedagogy (2014a) by urging the whole person to enter the learning experience. Nursing education, at a Jesuit University, involves educating the whole person within a service-oriented profession. Thus, experiential learning in a nursing course at a Jesuit University is an active component of Ignatian pedagogy, promoting Jesuit values and Catholic identity. This has been challenging since the COVID-19 pandemic forced universities to …
