The foundations for music education in America were built upon Eurocentric values, utilizing both folk and classical music from western Europe to cultivate an American music curriculum that greatly marginalizes non-white students. This long-standing tradition of positioning European music as superior to all others by allowing it to dominate the school curriculum is viewed by some as structural racism. Over the last 50 years there has been significant theory, practice and research into decolonizing the music curriculum and providing social justice for students in the classroom. An Orchestral Percussionist's Guide To Instruments Of The Caribbean, Lucas Brust

Sparked by the introduction of Janissary percussion into the works of the First Viennese School, composers have been steadily expanding the musical responsibilities and tonal palette of the orchestral percussion section. Most institutions of higher education extensively address the traditional orchestral percussion instruments and only relatively recently have these institutions begun incorporating the more “exotic” percussion instruments from various indigenous musical traditions. With the resources and proposed performance practices suggested in this document, orchestral percussionists can gain the knowledge and familiarity to identify the instruments by name and construction, demonstrate fluency in technique and sound production, and display basic understanding …

“Beginning the Baroque Bassoon: A Contemporary Approach” is an introductory method for bassoonists who are interested in learning how to play the baroque bassoon or transitioning from the modern bassoon to its baroque counterpart. This method begins with a history of the development of the bassoon before delving into specific performance techniques. This approach includes bassoon history, information on reed making, instructional examples, fingering charts, solo suggestions and playing examples, and resources for further study. While emphasizing beginning the baroque bassoon, this method also includes resources for the more advanced bassoonist. The goal of this text is to widen the …
