The purpose of this study was to enhance the phenomenon of mental toughness, by addressing the literature gap of how mental toughness can be developed in college football. This qualitative study used a tri-level snowball method, first interviewing head coach participants recommended from a collegiate football expert. Then, interviewing assistant coaches who were recommended by each head coach. Lastly, interviewing a focus group of current collegiate football athletes, who were recommended by both head coaches and assistant coaches. Abstract

The Social Cognitive Career Theory was applied to examine how the desire to coach or administrate are impacted by self-efficacy, occupational valence, perceived hindrance, and role model influence. This study was conducted to address the underrepresentation of females in collegiate sports leadership positions. The study examined if being coached by males or if males in leadership positions is preferred. Women coach less than half, (40.2%) of women’s sports and women account for 19.6% percent of administrators in college athletic departments. Players with leadership ability are persons coaches are constantly striving to find, develop and use in their sports program. Although coaches are groping for the people that possess these qualities, the identification of the qualities of leadership is a very difficult and evasive task. The major problem the coach faces is not having a lack of leadership on his team, but one of identifying the qualities of leadership and then using the person or persons with these recognized characteristics to the advantage of the team and its common goals.
