The Math Self-Efficacy Of Homeschool Parents And The Influence Of Math Self-Efficacy On Curriculum Choice, Kirsty W. Gilpin

The present study investigated the math self-efficacy of homeschool parents and whether there was a correlation between parental math self-efficacy (PMSE) and parents’ choice of mathematics curriculum. A simple random sample of parents with at least one child enrolled in Classical Conversations (N = 223) completed a survey to measure their math self-efficacy and provide information about their homeschool and mathematics curriculum choice. The PMSE level was a statistically significant 4.17, indicating that the sample has much confidence in their ability to learn and do mathematics. Home education or “homeschooling” began to re-emerge in the late 1960’s in the US, parallel to civil rights initiatives and shifting educational policies (Murphy, 2014). Nevertheless, few studies have been dedicated to examining the lives and practices of homeschool parents (Goldberg, 2021; Lois, 2006; Ray, 2021). Rather, topics have centered on homeschool demographics, academic outcomes, and challenges (Hauseman, 2011; Isenberg, 2007; Lines, 2000; Shepherd, 2010).
