Cultural Diversity Awareness: Perceptions Of Community Residents And Police Personnel, Vickie Minnifield Greene

Scholar Week 2016 - present

This study examined the difference in self-reported perceptions of cultural diversity awareness between two specific groups, community residents and police personnel, within a Midwestern city’s community and police department. This study also measured how their attitudes related to their likelihood to assist in enhancing the goals of community policing, which includes the prevention of crime. Literature cited demonstrates that social injustice toward African Americans and Latinos, cultural diversity ignorance, miscommunication, and lack of trust between community residents and police personnel are indicators that their relationships require positive solutions toward repairing a historically strained relationship. The Miami University Diversity Awareness Scale …

Increasing Student Academic Outcomes Through Intentional Layering Of Academic Intervention And Navigation Supports, Heather Krenzer, Donna Meyer Ms

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

EnCompass: Resources for Learning, an educational non-profit organization in Rochester NY, established in 2002, started providing targeted academic support to students through small group instruction, teaching study skills and executive functioning skills, test preparation, and after school programming through collaboration with the Rochester City School District and several local charter schools. While these programs and services directly supported students’ academic progress, it became increasingly clear that many students who need the additional support had sporadic attendance, and in some cases faced much greater barriers as a result traumatic life experiences, including living in conditions of poverty. The organization determined that …

Study Abroad For Transformational Learning Opportunities To Build Cultural Intelligence, Nicholas Tran Oct 2018

Study Abroad For Transformational Learning Opportunities To Build Cultural Intelligence, Nicholas Tran

Undergraduate Research Symposium - Prescott

Recent research points to questions on the value for students studying abroad while in college. Our conceptual paper links the transformative learning theory to the three dimensions of cultural intelligence to highlight the value of study abroad to provide life-changing learning opportunities. Through disorienting dilemmas and a process of cultivating critical reflection, study abroad students will generate new meaning schemes, or “habits of the mind” to view the world. In addition to critical reflection, the role of emotions plays a critical role in the development of self-awareness. These transformational learning experiences interconnect with the three-dimensional model of cultural intelligence through …

Course Designing With Maps, Marsha Beal Mar 2018

Course Designing With Maps, Marsha Beal

Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference

According to the Chicago Center for Teaching, “planning a course is arguably the key ingredient in pedagogical success.” A great metaphor for course design is like planning a trip to some place you have never gone before. To get there efficiently, a good road map is a must; because without one the driver may end up there eventually but not without detours and missed directions. The great news for teachers is that there are many (20+) instructional design “maps” called models. The ADDIE, Kirkpatrick, and SAM models are three of those models. This session will give an overview of each …

Hypoxia Mediated Selection In Breast Cancer, Vanessa R. Santos Apr 2011

Hypoxia Mediated Selection In Breast Cancer, Vanessa R. Santos

9th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium and Celebration

Understanding the consequences of tumor hypoxia has importance to both basic and applied cancer research. Using green fluorescent protein expressed ductal carcinoma in situ cells (cells of relatively less invasive natural among other types of breast cancer) kept in buffered and glucose rich media; cells were cultured under hypoxic conditions. Each day for ten days, one tissue culture dish is removed and counted for viability, toxicity, pH, and total cell count. These counts are then compared to a control kept in the incubator. Once 20% of the original sample remained viable, the cells were returned to normoxia and allowed to …
