The guiding theme that has given impetus to the federal government’s continued involvement in issues of accreditation has been that the government has sought to increase its control of higher education through accreditation. As Pedersen (2005) surmises, “…the federal government has chosen to use theregional associations as a "Trojan horse" to exert greater influence onaccreditation.” However, if representatives of Department of Education areasked, they will claim that the department has been motivated by an honestdesire to ensure that the public is not misled by false claims of quality and valuemade by colleges and universities.
