Mentors Support Grandfamilies Raising Grandchildren, Susan G. Weinberger

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

The role of mentors to provide support to Grandfamilies and their grandchildren is examined in this paper. How youth benefit when they are matched with mentors serving as their external advocates, assisting them and seeking resources for their success in school and life is discussed. Grandfamilies who wish to find mentors for youth need to know what resources are available and how to access them. These resources are also reviewed. In addition. non-profit agencies who design programs to serve Grandfamilies need to follow quality assurance standards. Tips are suggested to make this happen.

Dr. Robin Cooper is a faculty member in the Department of Biology and teaches physiology and neurobiology courses at the University of Kentucky. His research is in comparative physiology. He received a double major with a B.S. in Chemistry and Zoology from Texas Tech in 1983 and a PhD in Physiology from Texas Tech Medical School in 1989. He has had postdoctoral training in Switzerland and Canada for 7 years before joining the University of Kentucky in 1996.

The use of mentoring has nowadays become a predominant practice for the professional placement component of pre-service teacher education programs. Research however has identified that being an effective teacher doe not make you an effective mentor. The present research investigated the role of professional development in the preparation of mentor teachers for their mentoring roles. Specifically, this paper presents the findings of a pilot mentoring preparation course that engaged mentor teachers in developing their knowledge about the nature and process of mentoring, and the roles of mentors and mentees. The purpose of this study was to determine what sources of professional knowledge are available to principals in 1 rural East Tennessee school district. Qualitative research methods were applied to gain an understanding of what sources of knowledge are used by school principals in 1 rural East Tennessee school district and the barriers they face to using knowledge sources. This study questioned whether these resources are adequate for, accessible to, and used by school principals. In this study I examined principals’ perceptions of the need for a district-led mentoring program.
