This research paper tackles the relationship of socioeconomic status (SES) to students’ emergency electronic learning (e-Learning) during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown period in the Philippines. The study investigates the impact of accessibility to the students’ performance in distance learning. By looking at these variables, the researchers seek to answer the research question, ‘what is the impact of the students’ family socioeconomic status on their accessibility to emergency e-Learning’. This mini-study will be viewed in the lens of human capital theory guided by Gary Becker (1964).

Student engagement is consistently shown by research to be a critical component of student learning. An opportunity to link variables of perceived student engagement, perceived student-teacher relationship and clarity, an in-person learning format, and a remote learning format presented itself when, in March of 2020, all Illinois public schools were mandated by Governor J.B. Pritzker to teach in a fully remote structure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In an attempt to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus, virtually all schools around the world were closed by the end of the first quarter of 2020. Following a brief hiatus, the majority of the countries opted to utilize variations of distance learning—as opposed to resuming face-to-face classes—to minimize disruptions in the education of the more than 1.5 billion students in 191 countries. In the Philippines, the remote education multi-modal approach took the following forms: the use of modules (Modular Distance Learning), radio/television-based instruction (R/TVI), and online facilities.

This study was conducted in Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara Medan (UINSU), Indonesia. Participatory simulations usually aim to bring simulations off screen into a shared physical space with people acting as agents in the simulation. In this paper, we describe considerations and design decisions related to creating a participatory simulation for use in learning settings with restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic where typical classroom interactions were no longer allowed. We describe how our design decisions might help children both “dive in” and “step out” to understand more about pollinators and the prairie in spite of various restrictions on how exactly they can interact with each other. With the onset of a pandemic, there were opportunities and challenges for supporting learners. Schools and universities were physically closed while interaction shifted to a distance learning modality. In some instances, courses became asynchronous, while other courses met synchronously using video conferencing. Various instructor qualities have been shown to have variable influences student outcomes in online courses. In this study, the impact of faculty quality on student performance was examined by comparing student performance when taught by excellent faculty and average faculty (determined through administrative evaluations). We examined 328 student grades from a 2019 January term 200 level elementary statistics course. Student performance measures included final course scores, grade distributions and pass rates. Faculty have conducted many studies on the relationship between learning mode and student performance but few researchers have evaluated final grades, grade distribution, and pass rates in a sophomore introductory statistics course with a non-traditional student population who self-selected the learning mode from among different course sections. Accordingly, we examined 307 end-of-course grades from four different modes of instruction: (a) online, (b) videosynchronous learning classroom, (c) videosynchronous learning home, and (d) traditional classroom in an introductory statistics course.
