The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has largely disrupted every aspect of human life. At the height of the pandemic, the states governments' suspended in-person learning in the United States to reduce coronavirus spread through human contact. The suspension was followed by policies enabling the implementation of online learning for all students with special needs, caregivers, and educators in different ways. The closure of schools has disrupted student's routine, made caregivers assume the teacher's role, and required educators to shift to online learning. This action research study investigates the relationship between culturally responsive teaching and the impact on student engagement. For six weeks, the researcher implemented culturally responsive teaching strategies in a virtual first-grade classroom. The participants included fourteen six- and seven-year-olds who attended public school in Northern Virginia. The instruction was completed in a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the start and conclusion of the study, students were given a survey to measure the class climate. Student engagement was observed daily and documented on a weekly observation tally sheet. The purpose of the school improvement project was to determine the importance of blended learning, especially in relationship with the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on schools. An extensive review of literature on blended learning is provided, along with a comprehensive Return to Learn created by a task force from Sheldon High School, a public school located in Northwest Iowa.
