What constitutes an ideal prelicensure nursing curriculum is not well understood. Specifically, what are the strategic curricular sequencing and curricular themes or focus might be included to contribute to producing high quality graduates? The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study investigation was to look at successful programs and identify effective curricular sequencing and curricular themes or focus that might be inferred to have contributed to producing high quality graduates. One rapidly expanding nursing program at a public research university in the mid-south region of the United States served as the site for this study. Recent nurse graduates were selected in a purposeful sampling from alumni who had conferred degrees from May 2007 through May 2013. Sixty-three graduates completed the online survey in Phase I and five recent graduates participated in semi-structured interviews during Phase II of the study. Service-learning (SL) is proposed as a pedagogical method by the American Associate of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2008) for achieving the essential of professionalism and professional values (Essential VIII), which includes the concept of social justice. Along with the concept of social justice being discussed in Essential VIII, the concept of leadership is discussed throughout the AACN Essentials. SL has been implemented in many educational settings across the United States, including nursing.
