He also took home first place in the competition last year. The competition is sponsored by Mary McBeth in honor of her late husband, W. The event is sponsored by Mrs. Mary McBeth in honor of her husband, W. Francis McBeth, who was Arkansas’ composer laureate and a long-time Ouachita faculty member. Music majors often struggle in first-year music theory and aural skills coursework. These struggles have lead to increased dropout rates among music students. Even those students who succeed in music theory course work often are not able to apply theory concepts to music literature. Some universities have identified this problem and sought to rectify it through offering remedial course work, however the universities should not bear this burden. Success in theory and aural skills is linked to mastery of music fundamentals and basic aural skills. Dr. Ryan Lewis, assistant professor of music, directs the steel drum ensemble. He said he seeks to celebrate the instruments’ history by ensuring that the ensemble “performs at least 50 percent Trinidadian calypso and soca as a way to honor the nation from which the instruments originated.”

Caldwell graduated from Ouachita with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and studied trumpet under Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. She has since earned her master’s degree in trumpet and currently is completing her doctorate in trumpet at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Kim, an acclaimed pianist, is a specialist in American contemporary piano music. Currently an assistant professor of piano at Ohio University, she holds a Master of Music degree from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea; a Master of Music degree from Indiana University; and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from Ohio State University.

Ouachita Baptist University will host Arnold Rawls, a Metropolitan Opera tenor, in concert Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in Jones Performing Arts Center in conjunction with the Southern Region National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) conference. Tickets for guests not attending the conference are $12 each.

Rawls is an internationally known singer with a reputation of entertaining audiences through his mix of vocal and dramatic skills. His Metropolitan Opera debut as Radamès in Aida captivated the audience in 2011.

Ouachita Baptist University’s annual Ouachita Singers and Women’s Chorus fall concert will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall located on OBU’s campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The two groups also will release their new CD, “City Called Heaven,” for sale at the concert for $15 each.

Women’s Chorus meets to practice three times a week. In addition to performing in the fall concert, the Women’s Chorus travels to local churches to sing.

Sweet Time Suite by Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) is a landmark long form Jazz composition. A work of 40 minutes in length, Sweet Time Suite is rarely performed live. The 1990 album on which this piece appears, "Music for Large and Small Ensembles" is considered one of the most innovative and influential jazz albums of the last 30 years.

Dr. Shaw is an acknowledged expert on the work of Kenny Wheeler. He is currently working on an authorized autobiography.

Ouachita Baptist University’s Concert Choir will perform Mark Hayes’ Requiem and Te Deum on Thursday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at www.obu.edu/boxoffice.

The performance will be “an uplifting, exhilarating and worshipful musical experience,” said Dr. Jon Secrest, chair of Ouachita’s Department of Applied Music and director of the choir. “The music of Mark Hayes has immediate appeal for the tastes of our student musicians and audience members alike.”
