The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to explore the creative processes of elementary school students in music composition through the Orff-Schulwerk approach. Twenty-two 5th grade students and a music teacher with all three levels of the Orff-Schulwerk certification participated in the study. There were three main focal points that were investigated within a span of five-weeks: 1) children’s creativity in an Orff-based composition task, 2) children’s perceptions of their creative processes employed during the composition task, and 3) the teacher’s perceptions of teaching/learning music composition through the Orff-Schulwerk approach. Since the implementation and achievement score pressures of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, elective course offerings such as music have been drastically reduced, especially in the middle school setting. A great deal of correlational research has shown a positive correlation between music education in school and students’ overall academic achievement.

The general purpose of this research was to determine if a lesson including gender will influence the instrument selection process of fifth grade children. Subjects were two homogeneous groups of fifth grade students from Miami, Florida. Each group received a lesson concerning five acoustic musical instruments: the clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, and drums with photos and music excerpts.

The control group did not receive a gender lecture nor did the photographs depict anyone playing the instrument. Overwhelmingly, drums were the instrument of choice in both groups. As a result a second experiment was designed to replicate experiment 1, but drums …

A Descriptive Study Of The Ratio Of Approval To Disapproval Demonstrated By Music Teachers And Classroom Teachers In First, Second, And Third Grades, Manuel Emilio Brenes

The purpose of this study was to determine the approval to disapproval ratios of feedback given by music and classroom teachers to first, second and third grades. Eight teachers from a South Florida Elementary School were selected for this study.

Twelve 20-minute videos were taken for further examination. Analyses of data using percentage formulas were used to determine the ratio of each of the teacher reinforcement. Classroom teachers gave 2.3% social approval feedback, 59% academic approval feedback, 22% social disapproval feedback, 16.5% academic disapproval feedback, and 0% errors. Music teachers gave .7% social approval feedback, 67% academic approval feedback, 22% …
