The coronavirus has disrupted just about every facet of academia, especially music education. Like concerts and jam sessions, teaching music is a shared community experience, but the pandemic has prompted several educators to switch instruction from in-person to remote. How can a teacher help a student improve when they can’t be in the same room or even play together? Philip Edelman, an assistant professor of music education at UMaine, tried to make the best of a less than ideal situation. The musical touring version of James and the Giant Peach is adapted directly from Roald Dahl's classic children's book. This project blends two areas that hold much interest for our current students, musical theater, and children centered theater. Sweet Time Suite by Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) is a landmark long form Jazz composition. A work of 40 minutes in length, Sweet Time Suite is rarely performed live. The 1990 album on which this piece appears, "Music for Large and Small Ensembles" is considered one of the most innovative and influential jazz albums of the last 30 years.
Dr. Shaw is an acknowledged expert on the work of Kenny Wheeler. He is currently working on an authorized autobiography.

The University of Maine Symphonic Band has invited Dr. Nicholas Williams to be a guest conductor and clinician for the University of Maine Symphonic Band and our guest band from Hampden Academy; both bands will perform on the December 8th concert at the CCA. Our guest conductor will also give a performance clinic for the Old Town High School Band while in our region.

Urinetown is a satirical comedy musical that pokes fun at politics, greed, musical theater, and even its own name. It takes place in a world where water is so scarce that you have to pay to pee, and the rates keep going up. It opened on Broadway in 2001 and was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won three. UMaine's production of Urinetown will feature over 60 students, faculty, staff, and guest artists, and will take place in Hauck auditorium for seven performances.

"From the Top" is a show that showcases the talents of young, classically trained musicians from around the country. In this case, producers from the show auditioned young musicians from Maine. Those selected will be featured at the live performance at the Collins Center. The program is recorded and later re-broadcast on public radio stations nationwide, including MPBN.

Violinist Richard Hsu is an active soloist and chamber musician. Richard has performed with Orchestra of St. Luke's, Clarion Society, Early Music New York, New York State Baroque Ensemble, American Classical Orchestra, and Concert Royal. He was formerly Associate Concertmaster with the Moscow Ballet at Spoleto Festival USA. He holds a performer diploma and bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from the Indiana University School of Music. He furthered his studies at Manhattan School of Music. There will be several concerts of the music of visiting guest composers, performers and of Umaine Faculty. The University of Maine’s Fogler Library in partnership with the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and the Bangor Public Library received a two-year, $344,270 federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant to design and implement an interactive, multimedia digital music library of images of scores with associated sound renditions, cover art, and lyrics. Cover: Maya—painted clay figure from Jaina Island, Campeche, Mexico, 500-700A. D., approximately 100 percent. The clay figure is from a superb assemblage of pre-Hispanic materials from Mexico and Central America donated to the University of Maine’s Hudson Museum from the estate of William P Palmer III. In addition to this fine collection, Palmer donated an extensive array of objects from the Northwest Coast.
