The purpose of this study was to explore the numeracy skills required for safe, quality nursing practice. Using a descriptive mixed methods design, this study answered two research questions: 1) What numeracy skills do nurses perceive as important for providing safe, quality nursing care in the first three years of practice? 2) How do nurses incorporate numeracy skills into daily patient care during the first three years of practice? Background: Two medication simulations increasing in rigor, patient acuity, and distractions were implemented among undergraduate nursing students.

Objectives: To increase nursing student confidence, knowledge, and competence when administering medications.

Design: Two medication administration simulations were implemented and data was collected from students via a pre-simulation quiz, observation during the simulation via a Clinical Simulation Evaluation Tool, and student evaluation of the simulation with a modified version of the Simulation Evaluation Tool Likert scale.

Settings: Gaston Community College nursing simulation lab.

This capstone project serves as an important piece of greater project studying bison handling. Bison production is both a growing and dangerous industry. As a new enterprise in many parts of the country and on tribal lands, significant numbers of untrained employees may be hired. This project undertakes methods to better understand the risks associated with bison handling and to thereby improve handling procedures and increase safety. Herd managers (from tribal and non-tribal sites), researchers, safety experts, and stakeholders were brought together for a roundtable meeting in Omaha. Transfusions are the most common procedure that hospitalized patients undergo. One of the risks associated with a transfusion is a transfusion related adverse event (TAAE). Transfusion associated adverse events can occur in any patient receiving a transfusion. Some patients are at risk of certain TAAEs (e.g., heart failure patients at risk of transfusion associated circulatory overload) while other events (e.g., allergic reactions) cannot always be anticipated. The severity of a TAAE can range from mildly uncomfortable to life threatening. The context of the study was assessment of whether corrections officers in Appalachia are receiving adequate health and safety training who attended health and safety trainings sessions provided by the OSHA Training Institute and Education Center on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. Participants included in the study were corrections officers who have been working in corrections for a minimum of two years. Benefits include the opportunity for students to experience actual nursing responsibilities, immersion into environment, and professional socialization.
