The Effect Of Team Sports On Mental Health In Adolescents, Jhon Guarin

Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Synthesis Projects

There is research that shows the impact of physical activity and sport on the health of individuals participating. However, there is an area of research that is lacking regards to the impact of team sports on mental health, specifically amongst youth. Therefore, the purpose of this synthesis was to review the literature on the effects of team sports on mental health in youth and adolescents. Research has shown that there is a positive correlation between participation in a team sport and overall mental health in youth. Despite the amount of evidence, there still needs to be additional research conducted.

The Impact Of Mental Health Issues On Academic Achievement In High School Students, Patricia Lea Sutherland

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

An adolescent’s time in school is not merely academic; they are developing socially, physically, and emotionally. Prior research has demonstrated a correlation between a student’s poor academic performance and his/her need for emotional and mental health support. This research project sought to answer the following research questions: 1) Do mental health services in a high school setting help facilitate students’ academic achievement? and 2) Does a focus on mental health issues improve overall health and well-being in high school students? Participants for this study are 10 staff members (including teachers, administrators, counselors, and others) of a high ...

The Impact Of Resistance Training On High School Athletes: A Synthesis Of The Research Literature, Tyler Winter May 2018

The Impact Of Resistance Training On High School Athletes: A Synthesis Of The Research Literature, Tyler Winter

Kinesiology, Sport Studies, and Physical Education Synthesis Projects

This synthesis highlights the impact that resistance training has on adolescent high school athletes. More specifically, the review of literature examined the appropriate methodologies in programming for athletes and coaches, the physiological responses experienced by the athlete, and the sport-specific training outcomes experienced as a result. The synthesis used eleven peer-reviewed, scholarly articles that researched resistance training effects on adolescent athletes. Results demonstrated that most of adaptation that occurs because of program participation is primarily neuromuscular. Physiological adaptations in size will occur over a larger extent of time due to both training response and maturity. Intensity and complexity of desired ...

Violence And Aggression In School Settings, Barbara Katic May 2018

Violence And Aggression In School Settings, Barbara Katic

Wisdom in Education

Violence and aggression continue to cause harm to American schools and communities, which has been visibly illustrated by the continual perpetration of school shootings. In order to prevent these situations for occurring again, the etiology of violent and aggressive behaviors must be studied. Utilizing an ecological perspective, both the risk factors and protective factors of violence and aggression, also known as a dual strategy approach, are examined within an educational context. Specific risk factors reviewed include weapons exposure and social rejection, while protective factors reviewed include school connectedness and pro-social relationships. Implications regarding the prevention of violent and aggressive acts ...

Whether mindfulness training (MT) could improve healthy behaviors is unknown. This study sought to determine feasibility and acceptability of integrating MT into school-based health education (primary outcomes) and to explore its possible effects on healthy behaviors (exploratory outcomes). Two high schools in Massachusetts (2014-2015) were randomized to health education plus MT (HE-MT) (one session/week for 8weeks) or to health education plus attention control (HE-AC). Dietary habits (24-h dietary recalls) and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA/7-day recalls) were assessed at baseline, end of treatment (EOT), and 6months thereafter. Quantile regression and linear mixed models were used, respectively, to estimate effects ...

Facilitating Collaboration Among School And Community Providers In Children's Mental Health, Holly J. Curran

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Interprofessional collaboration among school-based and community-based mental health providers in children's mental has been studied in relation to specific providers and as part of program evaluation; however, limited information exists as to how to overcome barriers to collaborative relationships. This study describes the experiences of school and community mental health service providers and those who supervise them. Using phenomenological methodology, three focus-group interview transcripts were analyzed by identifying recurrent themes relevant to the experience of collaboration from school and community providers' perspectives. Although participants viewed aspects of collaboration positively, barriers frequently interfered with collaborative relationships. Support for collaboration from ...
