Background: Health literacy (HL) requires basic skills in writing, reading, numeracy, and communication all within a health context (Berkman et al., 2011). HL is a critical element for individuals to take an active role in managing their health. The National Assessment of Adult Literacy found only 12% of adults had a “proficient” HL level. Hispanics were found to be at greatest risk for lower HL than all other ethnic groups (Kutner, Greenberg, Jin, & Paulsen, 2006). Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory concurrent mixed methods study was to describe experiences that shape the factors of cultural intelligence (CQ) as perceived by students of professional physical therapist education programs. In addition, it was the purpose of this study to determine whether any particular factor of cultural intelligence influenced one’s overall cultural competence according to the cultural competence continuum by Cross et al. (1989).

ABSTRACT

This dissertation inquiry explores the narratives of two Black male nurses in southeast Georgia. The framework for my research includes a variety of different theoretical components including works from both major nursing and curriculum studies scholars. The nursing workforce remains homogenized despite major recruiting. The intention of my research was to explore the experiences of Black male nurses to identify challenges, barriers, and systems of oppression that they may have encountered working in a profession dominated by White females in order to facilitate development of culturally responsive pedagogy in nursing.
