A First Step: Analyzing The Professional Quality Of Life Of U.S. College Mental Health Counselors, Jeffrey Yoichi Kuroiwa

The study used a demographic questionnaire and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL) to conduct a national survey of mental health counselors (N = 236) working at colleges and universities in the United States. It was hypothesized that U.S. college mental health counselors would indicate higher than average scores on the ProQOL subscales for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress. The results show that U.S. college mental health counselors indicate average potential for compassion satisfaction and average risk for developing burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Unmanaged stress in teachers often triggers burnout, which leads to a rise in healthcare costs and absenteeism. Therefore, teachers' resiliency needs improvement to lower the risk of burnout. The purpose of this cross-sectional design study was to examine the relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience in high school teachers. An additional purpose of this study was to examine if the personality trait, conscientiousness, moderates the relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience. Burnout related to emotional and physical study or work demands affects an individual’s performance and well being. This study focused on Saudi Arabian dental residents studying in the United States and the United Kingdom who are faced with many challenges in pursuit of a higher education degree. The purpose of this study was to identify feelings of burnout within a selected school district in Minnesota and to identify contributing demographic factors. For this study, a random school district in Minnesota was chosen to be surveyed. By identifying feelings of burnout and demographic factors associated with these feelings, appropriate mental health interventions will be developed and implemented within school districts and the workplace. By implementing these interventions there will be a reduction in occupational burnout and stronger mental health among employees.
