Development Of Cultural Humility And Ethnocultural Empathy In Nursing Students, Claudia Keck
Development Of Cultural Humility And Ethnocultural Empathy In Nursing Students, Claudia Keck
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Problem: Differences in cultural backgrounds, values, beliefs, and practices between healthcare providers and clients can create challenges and lead to disparities, and adverse events. Healthcare providers’ cultural humility and ethnocultural empathy promote services that meet patients’ social and cultural needs. However, it is unclear how to best promote the development of cultural humility and ethnocultural empathy amongst nursing students.
Theory: The transformative learning theory, developed by Jack Mezirow guided the study.
Hypothesis: Students who participate in a cultural immersion experience will report higher cultural humility and ethnocultural empathy compared to students who receive a lecture.
Design and Methods: This study …
Use Of Standardized Test Results By Faculty And Students For Advanced Practice Nurse Certification Success, Dinorah Martinez-Anderson
Use Of Standardized Test Results By Faculty And Students For Advanced Practice Nurse Certification Success, Dinorah Martinez-Anderson
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The utilization of standardized testing as a recognized educational strategy to measure pre-professional readiness in Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) graduate programs has increased. Research supports such use for predicting licensure success for undergraduate education, however when related to the use in graduate nursing education, it is limited. Teaching and learning practices of APN faculty and students have not been comprehensively explored. This study examined the use of standardized testing results by faculty and students in APN graduate education that contributes to student national certification success. The Reconceptualization of Vygotsky’s Theory of Zone of Proximal Development (RVZPD) underpins the study. An …

Nursing Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is an exploration of strategies that optimize nursing student retention. While college students experience a degree of personal and social challenges toward degree completion, nursing students experience higher incidences of attrition due to the academic rigors, clinical scheduling, and high stresses of nursing programs. While few institutional contributions can address personal and social issues impacting retention, nursing programs have a unique opportunity to develop interventions to strengthen social connections to the academic institution and facilitate early connections to the profession. These professional integration factors are central domains of the Jeffreys’ Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) model and …
Language Proficiency And Academic Success Of Bilingual Hispanic Nursing Students, Cristina Dominguez
Language Proficiency And Academic Success Of Bilingual Hispanic Nursing Students, Cristina Dominguez
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
The United States (U.S.) experienced recent growth in its minority population. This requires an increase of culturally diverse healthcare providers. English as a second language (ESL) students face challenges such as overcoming their inability to write, comprehend, and communicate in a language different from their native tongue. The study explored the role of language proficiency on academic success among bilingual nursing students on the U.S. and Mexico border.
Cummins Language Proficiency Model guided the study, which aimed to answer whether the dimensions of language proficiency or language acculturation predicted self - assessed language proficiency and academic success. The relationship between …
Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera
Bariatric Surgery Weight-Loss Maintenance Among Hispanics: A Multiple Case Study, Minerva Aguilera
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Obesity significantly contributes to human illness and to subsequent rising healthcare expenditures. Bariatric surgery has been identified as the only effective option to achieve the weight loss necessary for those who are morbidly obese. Previous research indicated that maintaining significant weight loss has been a problem for individuals who undergo bariatric surgery. The number of bariatric surgeries is increasing and factors that contribute to or interfere following bariatric-surgery weight-loss maintenance need to be determined. Research on weight-loss maintenance following bariatric surgery is very limited, particularly among the Hispanic population. This case-study research used an explanatory, multiple-case-study design to gain greater …
