Postgraduate Residency Program: Pedagogical Strategies In Bridging The Transition From Novice Nurse Practitioner To Confident Primary Care Provider, Kelly Stauter, Katherine Bydalek
CoTL 2023 Research Talks
Advancing the education of new nurse practitioners helps close the gap with the knowledge and core competencies necessary to practice independently and master delivery of quality care across the life span to vulnerable populations. Innovative teaching strategies incorporate the needs of the novice nurse practitioner and are designed to support the inclusive learning environment through educational technology, learner-centered activities, interprofessional partnerships, and local community-based agencies that facilitate active learning. Expanding the didactic and clinical training experience by integrating specialty rotations and simulation immersive events, enhances learning outside of the classroom and equips the postgraduate nurse practitioner with the skills and …

Introduction: It is critical to evaluate student experience with any newly integrated educational resource. In 2018, a Distal Upper Limb (DUL) Anatomy eModule was developed for first-year medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, who have historically identified the DUL as a region of difficulty. This mixed methods study sought to (1) evaluate learner perception of the eModule relative to other resources, and (2) identify eModule content and features that students found valuable.
Methods: The DUL eModule was made available to first-year medical students in 2019 (n= 132), 2020 (n=131), and 2021 (n=131) as a voluntary, …

Pharmacy Faculty Books and Book Chapters
The rapid transition to distance learning in response to the unexpected SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic led to disruption of clinical skills development, which are typically conducted face-to-face. Consequently, faculty adapted their courses, using a multitude of active learning modalities, to meet student learning objectives in the didactic and experiential settings. Strategies and considerations to implement innovative delivery methods and address potential challenges are elucidated. Furthermore, integration of a layered learning approach may allow for more broad perspectives and allow additional interactions and feedback, which is especially necessary in the virtual environment.

Culture Change For Occupational Therapists On Safe Patient Handling And Mobility (Sphm): Advocacy For Sphm Policies For A National Organization., Guldana Alizakhova, Pam Kasyan-Howe, Kristin Domville, Lisa Schubert
Fall 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Safe patient handling and mobility is an ergonomic approach consisting of policies, programs, and equipment to reduce WMSD and facilitate a culture of safety among patients and healthcare practitioners. Due to occupational therapy’s established role in ergonomics, practitioners are skilled to utilize SPHM to provide evaluative, consultative, preventative, and therapeutic services to patients while preventing WMSDs to healthcare practitioners. Despite OT’s contributions to SPHM, occupational therapy practitioners are not recognized as leaders in SPHM. To address this problem, in the Spring 2021 meeting, the AOTA Representative Assembly was presented a request for action by a taskforce that also recognized this …

Spring 2021 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The purpose of this capstone project was to develop a cultural intelligence program for occupational therapy practitioners (OTP[s]). However, due to the results of the project’s research component, this capstone shifted to addressing a potential need for a global shift in the occupational therapy (OT) process and diversifying the content and dissemination of cultural training courses.
A mixed-methods survey was conducted to assess 45 OTPs’ confidence levels with delivering culturally intelligent care, their means of overcoming cultural barriers in clinical practice, and to collect anecdotes on the process of becoming a culturally intelligent practitioner.
Four primary research themes are developed …

Covid-10, Healthcare Interior Design + Provider Experience - How Does Your Space Work For You?, Ruth E.P. Deibler
Graduate Research Posters
The lack of research on healthcare staff experience and interior design of the spaces they work in is evident. A focus on staff perspective is needed, particularly staff who navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. This research seeks to capture those stories to develop further research in order to improve staff experience. The initial phase of this mixed-methods approach is a survey. Hypothetically, by placing providers at the center of qualitative research related to healthcare interior design, we can better understand existing healthcare spaces. Ideally, we can develop additional evidence-based, human-centered solutions to transform interior environments in healthcare.

Creating A Sustainable Occupational Therapy International Collaboration Through The Development Of A Cross-Cultural Pediatric Experience, Melissa Valencia, Becki Cohill, Beverly Hoffman, Susan Macdermott, Karen Park
Fall 2020 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
The multicultural population is expected to rise to 56% by the year 2060 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). Despite the ongoing increase in cultural diversity of the U.S. population, there still continues to be limited diversity in the field of occupational therapy (Crowe et al., 2016). In academia, it is recognized that there is a need for a necessary to focus on culture and occupational therapy. However, it is questioned to what extent this is actually implemented into the academic curriculum as what constitutes cultural competency in entry level practitioners varies (Humbert et al., 2012). Society is becoming less mono-cultural, indicating …

Promoting Lgbtq+ Inclusivity In Sex Education, Alexis Dela Cruz
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
LGBTQ youths report less satisfaction with their sex education curriculum than their heterosexual counterparts. The discrepancy between heterosexual sex education and that of LGBTQ is alarming. Currently, as it is reported within the Unites States, students feel as though LGBTQ sex education and resources are not readily available. A brief handout of LGBTQ inclusive practices was created for educators to reference when creating future lesson plans. The aim of this presentation was to create a more open and inclusive dialogue surrounding LGBTQ+ health.
Treatment & Management Of Acute Sinusitis In The Primary Care Setting, Vanessa Trieu
Treatment & Management Of Acute Sinusitis In The Primary Care Setting, Vanessa Trieu
Family Medicine Clerkship Student Projects
Sinusitis is a leading cause of primary care visits. The majority of cases are due to a viral infection, which can be self-treated with supportive care. Many patients are unaware of this and seek medical attention prematurely, incurring significant healthcare costs and resulting in antibiotic misuse. On the other hand, a prolonged infection or the presence of atypical symptoms does warrant medical attention and can potentially lead to untoward consequences if inadequately treated. The purpose of this project is to provide patient education on the expected course of an acute sinus infection and how to proceed with management.

Poster describing project collaboration among University of New England (UNE) librarians and College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) faculty, whose goal was to adopt technology which will teach UNECOM students to be empathic with older adults and familiarize medical students with information resources from the NIH/NLM related to older adult health. Technology tested was the Alfred Lab developed by Embodied Labs. First year medical students were required to complete the ‘We Are Alfred’ virtual reality module and a pre and post assessment. Descriptive statistics were applied to finite questions on pre and post assessments, and content analysis on open ended answers. …
