Language barriers have shown a need for differentiation and sheltered instruction in the classroom for English Learners (ELs) to be successful in the United States public school system. This project proposes a mathematics curriculum using SIOP so that both groups of students in the middle school level can increase their proficiency in the mathematics content area as well as experience opportunities for academic and social language development. The purpose of this report is to describe the processes, methods, data, and intent of the mathematics curriculum for these learners. In the state of Minnesota, more children who use a language other than English were reported to speak English less than “very well” (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). There was neither a “gold standard” (Verdon, McLeod, & Wong, 2013), nor Preferred Practices (ASHA, 2020) for the treatment of speech-language disorders for children who were bilingual. The current study investigated the practices for treating speech-language disorders in this population by SLPs employed in schools in a region of west-central MN and eastern ND. This study sought to find out if students who became bilingual score
higher, lower, or the same on standardized tests as their monolingual peers across
multiple disciplines. An answer was obtained by comparing the Minnesota
Comprehensive Assessment scores of Spanish language immersion students to
scores of non-immersion students for the following subject areas: reading in
grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10; math in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11; and science
in 5, 8, and high school. The scores used came from a graduating class of 2018
with approximately 342 students. Data was analyzed …
