Effective Faculty Onboarding, Larry Buckley, Andre O. Hudson Apr 2020

Effective Faculty Onboarding, Larry Buckley, Andre O. Hudson

Academic Chairpersons Conference Proceedings

New Academic Faculty face a deluge of new information when they arrive on campus. This is in addition to the stresses associated with a new campus environment, and for many the first position requiring completely independent planning and organization. Many faculty contribute career success or failure to successful and comprehensive support from colleagues from the very start of new positions. This workshop will require and assist all participants to develop an onboarding framework document that they can employ at their respective academic units/institutions. Topics to be discussed and included in such an onboarding guide include clear articulations of (1) Unit …

Supercavitation Capabilities On A Submarine, Adam Vu Mar 2020

Supercavitation Capabilities On A Submarine, Adam Vu

Georgia College Student Research Events

Submarines have shaped the way wars have been fought and have been influential in our understanding of fluid dynamics. In the past, supercavitation has been implemented to an idea that has been used to significantly increase the velocity of torpedoes in Chinese and Russian submarines. An example of this is the Russian VA-111 Shkval torpedo. The idea being that if your torpedo is expelling a gas out of the nose cone region, creating a boundary layer between the water and the torpedo, the torpedo will be facing much less resistance relative to when it was traveling in water alone. This …

Helping Stem Graduate Students Fall Into Research, Diana Hartle, Kelsey Forester Mar 2020

Helping Stem Graduate Students Fall Into Research, Diana Hartle, Kelsey Forester

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Each Fall and Spring semester, the UGA Science Library hosts a series of workshops for undergraduate and graduate students during one consolidated week focused on research needs. In the past year, librarians at the Science Library noticed a large and growing need for research and wellness support for our STEM graduate students. This led us to begin to collaborate with the graduate school, University Health Center, and other science and medical librarians. Through this collaboration, we reconstructed our semesterly workshop series to be tailored specifically to STEM graduate students. We offered workshops on citation management, tools for tracking scholarly presence, …

Science Students And Student Researchers: Outreach Challenges Facing A Satellite Librarian, Mason Brown Mar 2020

Science Students And Student Researchers: Outreach Challenges Facing A Satellite Librarian, Mason Brown

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

The CUNY (City University of New York) Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) has a small group of postdoctoral science students who are primarily onsite for lab work. I was asked to develop a series of library workshops that would appeal to both the ASRC students, and the more traditional grad students at the Graduate Center (GC) main campus. Developing seminars that appeal to users as both students and as researchers simultaneously have been a rewarding challenge. I will discuss how I developed and modified these topics over the course of one semester for two different audiences, as well as the …

Archives And Stem: The Perfect Formula For Immersive Cross-Disciplinary Instruction., Dawn N. Cannon-Rech, Autumn Johnson

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Reaching out to STEM Students beyond the one-shot requested instruction sessions is challenging. Creating faculty buy-in for non-traditional STEM instruction is doubly challenging. This poster will highlight a recent activity designed to draw STEM participation in utilizing a unique set of resources from the institution’s Archival Collections. Normally viewed as primarily relevant to history and humanities students, this collection provides the backbone for a fully immersive Escape Room Activity and exposure to primary sources normally not considered part of the normal STEM course work. The hands-on activity provides an opportunity for critical thinking, reflection, and teamwork. The poster will highlight …

Majors level Human Anatomy has long been taught as a gatekeeping class for medical schools of graduate schools, and has been highly professionalized due to this. It has also been constructed historically in a very hierarchical paradigm that has multiple oppressions supporting both the study of anatomy and the anatomy classroom. Besides these social issues around anatomy, there are the pedagogical issues of treating this material as something to just memorize and not understand that can cause problems for a student of anatomy. Disrupting these processes can be a very powerful force for anti-racism, anti-sexism, and hopefully …
