Pulling The Wool Under Your Eyes: Preserving A Century-Old Wool Lab And Library At The University Of Wyoming, David Kruger
Pulling The Wool Under Your Eyes: Preserving A Century-Old Wool Lab And Library At The University Of Wyoming, David Kruger
David Delbert Kruger
Sheep and wool have long been integral to the agrarian heritage of Western states, and still play a vital role in the region’s agricultural economy. From 1907-2012, Wyoming’s sole university supported wool research around the world through its Wool Department, complete with its own wool laboratory and library. When the Wool Department was permanently dissolved and its building condemned for demolition in 2012, the University of Wyoming (UW) Libraries partnered with UW Extension and the UW College of Agriculture and Natural Resources to preserve the unusual print and physical artifacts of this unique collection, as well as disseminate the spirit …

A Critical Examination Of Food Technology, Innovation And Teacher Education: A Technacy Genre Theory Perspective, Angela Turner
A Critical Examination Of Food Technology, Innovation And Teacher Education: A Technacy Genre Theory Perspective, Angela Turner
Dr Angela Turner
The broad goal of this thesis was to examine the extent to which Food Technology in secondary schooling enables a pathway into the study of Food Technology at a higher education level. The study was guided by Technacy Genre Theory as it was assessed as offering the most contemporary approach in the literature for examining forms of technological knowledge through measuring the relationship between Human, Tool and Material/Ingredients of technological practice. The research found that Food Technology teaching in many secondary schools was significantly different to the genre practiced by the vast majority of professional Food Technologists.

This paper presents a summary of findings from a recent Australian study that investigated perceptions of ‘food technology’ as viewed by teachers in secondary schools compared to a wider professional view. While ‘food technology’ has been well established in most Australian secondary school curricula, a contradiction has emerged between the ‘school view’ of the Food Technology label and the ‘professional view’ of the same. The use of identical language to describe different approaches is causing a significant problem for the food profession. A framework known as Technacy Genre Theory was used to analyse data from a survey of 382 relevant …

The writers describe a program to communicate undergraduate research results to local K–12 students in California. They describe the development of a curriculum and an outreach effort to convey findings of ecological field work undertaken by Pepperdine University students. They then describe program implementation and program benefits.
