Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison Jun 2010

Culturally Relevant Information Literacy, Rob Morrison

Rob Morrison

This paper is a qualitative case study of the role of culture in the information-seeking process. This study revealed that culture does impact how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must deeply engage in discussions on literacy and how information is tied to knowledge that does not limit learners to the Western worldview. Information Literacy will always be an abstract term until integrated into knowledge production.

This study revealed that culture does affect how we locate, evaluate and value information and thus specific kinds of knowledge. Librarians and educators must engage in discussions on “Critical Information Literacy” where information is tied to knowledge creation that does not limit learners to a specific cultural worldview. Information and information-seeking processes cannot be separated from knowledge production

Learning Spaces For The New Way Students Work, Helen Y. Chu

Helen Y. Chu

Learning space design has not changed – at least not in its goal. We aspire to provide facilities and resources that support instruction and research. We want to engage and motivate our students. But our students have changed. Their needs and expectations have changed. Our students – and faculty – work and think differently. We need to redefine what “learning spaces” are. We need to re-engineer our formal and informal learning spaces. Come see the surprising and non-traditional learning spaces that the University of Oregon has transformed in hopes of inspiring a new generation of thinkers, leaders, and innovators.

Librarianship In The 21st Century: Lessons In Leadership, Rob Morrison, Jack Fritts

Rob Morrison

Many of the challenges librarians face in the 21st century have existed for years and reflect the nature of higher education and society in the United States. One issue the presenters have observed is that librarians, like many educators, react to rapidly changing systems, pressures, economics, and technologies by “balancing” workloads and budgets and not by deeply reflecting on how to change strategies in order to integrate themselves more fully into academic curricula, prove the library’s value to administrators, and develop meaningful services and resources. In order to thrive and survive, librarians must be proactive at their institutions in areas …

Ten Tips For Implementing A Successful Embedded Librarian Program, Kelly Heider

Kelly Heider

In January of 2006, Indiana University of Pennsylvania Libraries began a successful embedded librarian program in the university’s College of Education and Educational Technology. The program has improved the library’s relationship with faculty and students; shaped a more relevant collection of print, media, and electronic resources that meets curriculum, instruction, and research needs; created opportunities for college/university library collaboration through new programs, team-teaching, and scholarly endeavors; and, most importantly, improved the quality of teaching and learning in the College of Education. The following article outlines the strategies IUP Libraries used to hire an embedded librarian, develop that librarian’s presence in …
