Post-Acquisition Management And The Issue Of Inaccessibility, Beth Caruso Oct 2017

Post-Acquisition Management And The Issue Of Inaccessibility, Beth Caruso

Charleston Library Conference

Though advocates are calling for publishers to develop born-accessible e-books to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) standards and the EPUB 3.0 measures now backed by the Society for Disability Studies, the realistic timespan for this achievement to become standard practice is far from ideal. To equitably serve users with disabilities, stronger technology and a mindset toward accessibility must become the standard in electronic collections. Librarians are expected to have a strong working knowledge of the library’s collections but receive little training in best practices for assisting patrons with disabilities. We cannot wait …

Housing Diversity In Children’S Literature, Carla Earhart Oct 2017

Housing Diversity In Children’S Literature, Carla Earhart

Charleston Library Conference

Previous studies have examined diversity in children’s literature: Gender diversity, racial diversity, religious diversity, and diversity in family composition. This project examines an often overlooked diversity issue in children’s literature: Housing diversity. In the stories they read and the accompanying images, children need to see a variety of housing environments and need to see the settings and the people portrayed in a positive manner.

Renting an apartment is an increasingly popular housing option for many families. However, many children’s books glamorize living in a traditional house. Using a rubric designed by the course instructor, students in a university immersive learning …

Apples To Oranges: Comparing Streaming Video Platforms, Steven Milewski, Monique Threatt Oct 2017

Apples To Oranges: Comparing Streaming Video Platforms, Steven Milewski, Monique Threatt

Charleston Library Conference

Librarians rely on an ever-increasing variety of platforms to deliver streaming video content to our patrons. These two presentations will examine different aspects of video streaming platforms to gain guidance from the comparison of platforms. The first will examine the accessibility compliance of the various video streaming platforms for users with disabilities by examining accessibility features of the platforms. The second will be a comparison of subject usage of two of the larger video streaming platform providers (Alexander Street Press and Kanopy) done at Indiana University Bloomington, a large public university.

Open Educational Resources Workshops: Instruction, Interaction, Incentive, Elaine M. Lasda, Julie Cuccio Slichko Dr.

Open Access Day

Open educational resources (OERs) are a viable alternative to costly textbooks because they improve economic accessibility to higher education, course completion rates, and student learning outcomes. Through SUNY’s Innovative Instruction Technology Grant program, the University Libraries and Information Technology Services have partnered to create a model for professional development in facilitating the adoption of OERs in online courses. Details of this model will be discussed, and the Fall 2017 program faculty cohort will be announced.

Stumbling blocks and program challenges will also be presented.

Human A&P: Collaborative Oer Adoption, Lindsay Biga May 2017

Human A&P: Collaborative Oer Adoption, Lindsay Biga

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Despite the availability of open source textbooks, few faculty have adopted OERs as primary course resources for several reasons. Faculty are dubious as to whether OERs are sufficiently rigorous academically and as extensively reviewed as traditional textbooks distributed by major publishers. Additionally, faculty note that many scientific disciplines rely heavily on high quality, scientifically accurate figures, an area in which OERs pale in comparison to traditional textbooks. Further, OER ancillary materials are often inferior when available at all. But perhaps most importantly, faculty have not adopted OERs because they are basically satisfied with their current textbooks and lack the time …

The Oer As Open Creative Act, Jenn Kepka May 2017

The Oer As Open Creative Act, Jenn Kepka

Open Educational Resources Symposium

This session will discuss ways that OER texts can be opened for student and colleague input, both as a way to encourage open pedagogy and as a way to increase the work's sustainability. The example used will be the 2017-2017 writing texts created for WR121 and WR122. We will also discuss the constructivist and connectivist value of creating educational resources that are adaptable by students and faculty. Attendees will be invited to brainstorm and then workshop their own materials during the session so that they leave with an action list of next steps to take in opening their own class …

Statistics: The Text For Student Success, Larry Shrewsbury May 2017

Statistics: The Text For Student Success, Larry Shrewsbury

Open Educational Resources Symposium

My session is for those looking for an open source textbook for Statistics (MTH 243). As a grant recipient the faculty from both Southern Oregon University and Rogue Community College looked at several open source textbooks for our MTH 243 classes. We first looked at the very popular OpenStax Statistics, but the consensus was that it wasn’t as good as the textbook we’ve been using (Michael Sullivan’s Statistics, Informed Decisions using Data, 4th Edition). So we agreed to keep looking at more open source Statistics textbooks. We came across one that doesn’t seem to be very well known, but some …

The Benefits Of Oer In A University Arabic Course, Lina Gomaa

Open Educational Resources Symposium

I will share my experience writing and e-publishing my open textbook and using it in the classroom. It is the first Arabic textbook in the Open Textbook library at the University of Minnesota and Portland State University’s library website. The book has been downloaded over 300 times all over the world in a year and counting. In addition to the e-book, I will discuss my experience with mediaspace.pdx.edu in class teaching and the students’ reactions to incorporating it in teaching Arabic.

Converting Calculus Oer Into A Multimedia Text, Alex Jordan, Carly Vollet May 2017

Converting Calculus Oer Into A Multimedia Text, Alex Jordan, Carly Vollet

Open Educational Resources Symposium

We have used MathBook XML software to convert two popular OERs for calculus into a multimedia format that

integrates online homework support. We'll demonstrate various features of the output, and the methods we use to edit these OERs. As time permits, we'll peek at some other OER projects that are using MathBook XML.

Our goal is to promote these two particular OERs and also the use of MathBook XML, which, in spite of its name, is an excellent tool for writing OER in all subjects. Potential attendees who are not particularly interested in mathematics may still be interested in the …

A Living Text: Rethinking Developmental Reading & Writing, Monique Babin, Carol Burnell, Sue Pesznecker May 2017

A Living Text: Rethinking Developmental Reading & Writing, Monique Babin, Carol Burnell, Sue Pesznecker

Open Educational Resources Symposium

Carol Burnell, Nicole Rosevear, Susan Pesznecker, and Monique Babin of Clackamas Community College (CCC), along with Jaime Wood of Portland State University, are currently developing an OER for CCC's developmental reading and writing courses, WRD-090 and -098. This project grew from a desire to create a resource that would evolve and grow along with the experience of the students and educators who use it. Their OER provides practical advice for reading and writing about college-level texts (books, articles, websites, visual texts, videos, and other multimedia). It guides students to work with these texts in different ways, according to the demands …

Recognition, Internalization, Growth: Intuitive Design For Archival Representation, Jaime L. Ganzel May 2017

Recognition, Internalization, Growth: Intuitive Design For Archival Representation, Jaime L. Ganzel

Graduate Student Symposium

Although there is a pressing need for archival description and access systems to be more intuitive and user-friendly, the uniqueness of archival records presents significant barriers to establishing simplistic and standardized conventions for the representation of archival materials. Indecipherable finding aids and access tools prevent new and inexperienced researchers from accessing the unique information and documentation held in archives. This article aims to help open the archival record to new and non-traditional archival users, support individual development of archival literacy skills, and cultivate a greater level of archival awareness in our society by developing a usable model for archivists to …
