Response to Intervention (RTI) developed out of educational policies and practices that comprise NCLB and IDEA. RTI is a system to ensure all students receive high-quality instruction that meets their needs, increases opportunities to learn, and prevents reading failure. A culturally relevant RTI framework offers the most promising pedagogical approach to quality instruction and educational equity. The purpose of this study was to understand, describe, and explore the intersection of culturally relevant practices and RTI. Over the last several decades research has been conducted surrounding popular culture and children’s writing/composing. Much of this research focused on children in early elementary school classrooms. I discovered, when preparing for this project, that there was very little published research (written in English) surrounding preschool-aged children’s compositions (with or without the emphasis on popular culture), and what happens in the writing center. This qualitative case study was framed by an experiential learning approachorganized around video resources and linguistically and culturally responsivecontent teaching. The study explored an overarching research question: How didteacher-learners in a grant project interact with a multimedia learning platformthat combined teaching video and VoiceThread presentation, called VT project,designed to enhance their linguistically and culturally responsive content teaching(LCRCT) for English learners (ELs)?
